FYI, I’m also in favor of putting indelible purple dye on the thumb of anyone who votes. I’m also in favor of letting people vote twice - if the purple thumb is amputated.

That is why the counting machine should be different than the voting machine.

I can think of a few other safeguards. For instance, take a sample of ballots counted in the machine, and verify by hand count or some other non-alterable means that the count of the sample of ballots is the same as the count in the active machine.

Can you read the roll and verify that it reflects the vote that you selected, or does that roll have some machine code on it that you cannot read?

The alteration of the vote occurs inside the machine, and the count of the ballots should occur on a physically separate machine.
