For every $10 of US-made can opener, you probably have purchased $1000 worth of can foodstuffs from China and Mexico
I don’t want to die of food poisoning.

Just curious ... can you give me the name of the US-made can opener you purchased? I want to check if the steel (assuming it is made of steel) is also US-made, or imported from China, contributing to our trade deficit.

The unemployed former Apple workers in CA and CO are certainly “thankful”.

As someone who makes a little money on the side selling crap on eBay, the following situation has come to my attention:

It costs something like $12 to ship a small package from the US to China, and that is without tracking. If you want tracking, the cost roughly triples.

Yet the listings on eBay are crammed full of sellers in China who are able to sell their stuff shipped to the US for a fraction of what it costs to ship to China.

I have actually seen items listed for $0.99 delivered from China to the US with FREE SHIPPING. The same item shipped from my town to the next town over will cost $2.45.

I have a lot of stuff that I simply can't sell anymore because the Chinese are able to sell their cheap crap cheap, and ship it for nothing, and they have flooded the market.

WTF? How can this be?

Ask Donald Trump.

This is one of the stupid deals we have made with the Chinese (in this case, the USPS), plus the fact that the Chicoms are subsidizing their businesses so they can put US businesses out of action.

This is all happening with the blessing of the USPS, which is swimming in red ink.

Sorry for the rant, but this really pisses me off, and is one of many reasons that I will be voting for Mr. Trump.

A hundred billion here, a hundred billion there, and before you know it you’re talking about a lot of money.

This is not happening by accident, it is to bring US down to their standard of living... Might want to start thinking about eating your dogs, and call it ‘ diversity ‘ of culture.

Turns out I saved the wrapping. It’s a Good Cook brand “U.S.A.” can opener, and it makes a big point of being “Made In The U.S.A.” on both sides of same. The reverse says “Crafted with care in St. Louis, MO”, and reveals that it’s a brand of Bradshaw International. No further details other than care and usage instructions and warranty statement. It’s actually the best can opener I’ve bought in the past decade.

That’s what happens when there is a deliberate effort to undermine US businesses, hence the massive price disparity noted by one poster. Between ridiculous laws that drive up costs and literally sponsoring the Chinese to come run them out of business its no wonder they cost 5x more.

Thing is, the increased costs of making stuff here would be a non-factor if our factories were running full-bore instead of being shuttered and our neighbors had full-time careers with benefits instead of 3 part-time jobs at fast food places.

Not to mention the unpleasant little fact that the current trade model makes us totally dependent on a dubiously-friendly foreign power. We could not go two weeks without Chinese goods if that much.

I would say that everyone here knows the 45 communist goals for the USA that are listed in The Naked Communist by now. Goals #15 and #37 respectively were:
  1. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.
  1. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.
Those two combined would result in a total reversal of US domination of the manufacturing sector. And this is something that was warned against by many of the Founding Fathers, in light of the dependence on France during the fight for independence. Alexander Hamilton wrote this in 1791:
Not only the wealth, but the independence and security of a country, appear to be materially connected with the prosperity of manufactures. Every nation, with a view to those great objects, ought to endeavor to possess within itself all the essentials of national supply. These comprise the means of subsistence, habitation, clothing, and defense.
Of course, the left will see to it that we have next to none of the essentials of national supply, or as much of it as will damage national security as badly as possible.

Tim Cook’s political behavior towards Indiana is a prime example.
