What Trump actually said was that he’d like to hear from the mother. The leftists have turned that comment into the vilest attack ever aimed at a human being—and droves of hot house conservatives are beside themselves with eagerness to agree.

The real problem here is that Trump is engaging with this guy at all. It could have been dealt with in three sentences:
“I have the deepest sympathies for the Khans, and we should all applaud the heroic sacrifice of Capt. Khan. I agree that few people have made sacrifices as profound as their own. However, it is simply not true that the Constitution requires that we accept people from countries with close ties to terrorism, and I will not put the American people at risk by continuing to import people who hate us,” etc., etc.
Trump needs to grow up and get a thicker skin, and fast.
