I am retired now; however, I still have four clients that keep me pretty busy doing exactly what I want to do. As a side interest and a second career, I will begin teaching my trade in high school in two weeks. (High school!! I cultivated that job within the school system.) The pay is not good, so I will hang onto my clients.
I am an embedded software engineer who can also design and fabricate uP boards, make enclosures in my shop, document the technical details, and even compile user's manuals. If you really want to work in STEM, you can. You just have to find your work without having to go through dysfunctional HR departments. The best of times comes from being self employed. Using the Internet as a tool, it isn't very difficult to find clients. As a solo engineer, it is easy to beat the price of engineering firms. Just deliver real bang for the buck and stay square with the IRS.
A short time in the military never hurts. That is how I got my first job with a NASA contractor in Huntsville.

I am neither defending the program or cutting people down. I am telling you what I saw first hand. Americans are gravitating toward a sense of entitlement and away from real work ethics. If that bothers you, dig in and turn the trends before it is too late.
I deplore the H1B system, and all outsourcing. There are reasons all that is happening. That is where you should direct your ire.
1. Eliminate the federal Dept. of Education and fire everyone employed there. Return oversight of the schools to the states. 2. Recommend (not gonna mandate) that every elementary school in the country drop the common core math curriculum and replace it with Saxon Math or something similar. 3. Offer remedial math classes to all kids whose brains have been raped by common core math. Actually teach them to do math, starting from arithmetic facts drills if necessary. 4. Restructure secondary math education to admit that not every kid can do advanced math. Every kid should have to take basic algebra, basic trig and basic geometry, but save anything more advanced for the kids that will need it. Every kid should graduate high school having been exposed to the basic skills above along with household budgeting, understanding basic bank and loan interest, and how to estimate percentages (I have known adults who were incapable of estimating the 10% adder at the local cost plus market). Stop trying to make math fit into the liberal everything-is-gray world - it drives libtards absolutely nuts to think that there is something in the world which has right and wrong answers and proven best ways to get them. We must do what we can to salvage the kids who have been rendered mathematically illiterate by our schools, but in reality most of the older ones are probably ruined for life. Need to make sure that the younger generation is properly instructed.
Really? From where I’m sitting it looks a lot more like a political/ethnic purge than business needs at play.

We’re turning into the old USSR. ME grads with 3.5 GPA’s will be serving you your coffee at Starbucks soon and screaming for socialism. It’s “the plan” for getting the rest of us on the plantation. Sad that so many who should know better are walking the country right into the abyss.
I managed to do it. It costs about $200 to register a company, and you can set up a web page with your ISP. Working for somebody else IS NOT the American dream. It is sad that Americans have lost the entrepreneurial spirit. Those coming into the Nation via immigration are taking advantage of that opportunity.
Incoming foreigners tend to score better on the SAT. American folks seem to play video games and text each other all day rather than study. The seats are usually given out based of scholarly merit.

I scored top 0.05% on the ACT, and I have a 3.5 GPA as an ME major. The things you’re saying are every bit as true of foreign students in my experience, and some of the ones with money cheat like hell or expect their classmates to do all/most their work for them on the non-stop group projects we get assigned.
Scholarly merit is only a small part of the reason why there are virtually no US grad students in STEM disciplines, and why they aren’t being hired out of college.
In my 43 year career I was NEVER selected by the HR department. I always had an insider that could pull me in over the wailing of the HR people. Taking an internship during college is fairly important.
The other problem with our industry is that they now outsource as much as possible. That hurt mechanical, electronic, and software engineers the most. Of course, those three disciplines are the core of the electronics industry. The hardest obstacle for me is locating new work or having an idea for a product. I can make most anything, but generally cannot conjure up products. I sought out marketing people and collaborated with them to make new products. That gets mixed results since many of them will find a way to dump you once the product catches hold. Always form a company to protect your interests.
Useless people seem to be able to stay in large companies, and even advance into management positions. People in smaller companies tend to be good since employers pretty much have to cull the dullards in order to survive. I had much better employment with small companies; however, you will be accused of job-hopping since small companies usually fold.
People like to bitch about the government efforts like NASA; however, the best atmosphere for engineers and scientists occur during times of war or during projects like Apollo.
I’ll keep my eyes peeled for an ME position. In my locale there is only Meggitt Training Systems. That would be a fun place to work.
