A few weeks after 9/11 there was an article about all the "grief counselors" who descended on NYC in the aftermath of that atrocity.
Apparently this industry, as you rightly call it, has few standards and no code of ethics. Practically anyone can claim to be a grief counselor, and be paid for it.
According to the article, real professionals refer to grief counselors, especially those who flock to the scene of an atrocity or a disaster, as "trauma tourists."
I've been excoriated for criticizing the bathetic piles of teddy bears, flowers, and soggy hand-written "tributes" that somehow have became de rigeur for public displays of grieving.
This silliness began before the death of Princess Diana -- but the size of the piles of junk, heaped in her honor, might have surpassed all previous piles.
For me this signaled the end of traditional British stoicism and dignified restraint. It also signaled weakness to Britain's enemies.
Well the no gun zone signs work so well.
I had not heard the “trauma tourist” descriptive.
I love it.
