God’s sovereignty is the issue. If Jesus/God the Father/ Holy Spirit is Lord (I do hope you are Trinitarian), it means that he rules in all affairs, including the affairs of men. As Peter said in Acts, we must obey God rather than men when the commands of men contradict God’s law. [http://biblehub.com/acts/5-29.htm]
We are justified by grace, but we are sanctified through obedience to God’s law.
Trinitarianism means God’s sovereignty was not the most crucial issue at the kenosis.
I believe Hypostatic Union is the correct doctrine. But, in any event, I’ve enjoyed the exchange.
That's not the primary thing that it's about, the primary thing is Jesus and the Cross. It outlines the great divide separating us from Him, sin, because it shows the need for Jesus's work on the Cross. It follows God's making a people for Himself, which is a foreshadowing of Him bringing all peoples to Him, through the Cross. The Law was given, not to save, but to condemn; so that we might know we need the propitiation of Jesus on the Cross. Even the Resurrection, the proof and seal that Jesus's is who He said He is and his words True and Faithful, points to the Cross: for if Jesus did not die, then the Resurrection is a lie.
That’s more than a bit out of context. In any event, the Bible is, of course, about salvation, but it isn’t just a “fire insurance brochure”. Most of today’s Evengelical churches treat it that way, however, which is heretical by omission.
Oh really? Howso?
In any event, the Bible is, of course, about salvation,
Which is exactly Jesus's work on the cross. Period. — So I fail to see how you can say my explanation was out of context, considering it's exactly the same context.
but it isnt just a fire insurance brochure. Most of todays Evengelical churches treat it that way, however, which is heretical by omission.
I never said that it was, nor did anything I said really imply it.
Amen, I 100% agree! When you read what Jesus said and to whom and where he said it, you can't possibly see Jesus as that doe-eyed Bee Gees singer holding a nice little lamb. The guy is no-nonsense and really blunt--not because He's a jerk but because He cared about who He was talking to and they needed the unambiguous message especially since so many of them didn't care to hear it.
If you don’t disagree with my last comment, then there is little about which we actually disagree.
