Count me in with the group that is advocating keeping it classy and neutral while knowing that living well is the best revenge. I’m exactly nine years gone from an unpleasant employment situation and things have turned up roses for me. My personal distaste for my previous manager is now tempered by my knowledge of how his every day is just another bite of the crap sandwich that’s served there. I see him occasionally at industry events and exchange nothing but banal pleasantries.
Don’t put anything with your name and/or signature on it that even might be controversial. But also don’t miss an opportunity to poke a hole in the ego of someone who makes the lives of his coworkers and underlings miserable. Seeing them open a card with a nasty message inside or an ‘award’ with a stealth insult to their IQ/manhood/abilities/etc. may give them a desperately needed smile.
I gave a smarmy supervisor a stuffed female dog with a derpy expression. She thought it was cute and kept it on her desk for quite some time until she asked why people kept snickering as they walked past her desk and someone who’d turned in his 2-weeks-notice informed her what was the OTHER name for a female dog.
Hey, the food was good and so were the banal exchange of pleasantries. Who knows but that I may get better at slithering around in the grass when I have to?
