Rusty Page carries Lexi while Summer Page, in the background, cries as members of family services, left, arrive to take Lexi away from her foster family in Santa Clarita, Calif., on March 21.

Good Lord. I’m more than 1/64th Native American. I think most people who have ancestors who have been in America since the 1800s probably have 1/64th Native American blood. This is insanity.

I thought they kicked you out if you were less than 1/16th. If those rules have changed, then I’m due some of that casino $$$$. My great... grandfather came over with John Smith to Jamestown and married an Indian woman. That’s about as far reaching as this poor child’s 1/64th.

1/64th is about as much Indian Elizabeth Warren is (or any of us for that matter). How come someone doesn’t come and take HER away?

Hmmm...

100% = I am 100% Choctaw
50%= My parent(1) was Choctaw
25%= My grandparent(1) was Choctaw
12.5%= My great grandparent(1) was Choctaw
6.25%= My great great grandparent(1) was Choctaw
3.125%= My great great great grandparent(1) was Choctaw
1.0625%= My great great great great grandparent(1) was Choctaw

For this little girl to be only 1.06% Choctaw, there has only been one Native American in her bloodline in the last seven generations.

The article states: “Her father, who had a criminal history, never lived on a Choctaw reservation and didn’t have any social, political, or cultural ties to the tribe, according to the court documents. But officials determined that Lexi is 1/64th Choctaw based on his ancestry.”

And:

“The documents said that Lexi is related to the Utah couple, who are not Native American, through her step-grandfather.”

Is a “step-grandfather” even a blood relation? Step grandfather, to me anyway, means something like the second husband of the grand mother AFTER she had the girl’s father.

One of her 3rd great-grandparents was an Indian. Wow, so does that make 20% of the country Indian, or what?

This is absurd. What this country did to the Indians was horrendous, beyond forgiveness...but ripping this poor little girl away from the only family that actually cares about her is just heartless. We’re taught in school that government is here to represent us, to serve us, to make life better for us - what a freaking bald-faced LIE!

since when does less than 2% make you an Indian?.....you can best believe the rich tribes don't give any money to anyone with so little of their "precious" blood....

this is what happens in a liberal stupid country....some people do in fact matter more than others....and the vast majority of we working tax paying stiffs get to enjoy few of the advantages and preferences but we sure do get to pay for them...

you think the Indians would want this girl if she had downs syndrome or spina bifida?....no way....

I suppose the girl is a cash cow for the supposed extended extended family relatives to collect on..

There’s a whole other side to this story that gives it a great deal more context. It is not as simple as the headlines make it sound. From what I’ve read, the Page family always knew that the little girl could not be adopted. The girl’s father still has parental rights, and has been working to get his daughter back, but in the meantime, he wants her to live with family, where her sister already lives, and another sibling lives down the street, because he feels that the Page family has made it difficult for him to see her. But the Page family decided to fight for custody of a foster child that they had no legal right to. That’s what extended this and made it take so long - all the while, leaving the girl living with the Page family as the case worked its way through the courts. So, the Page family now can say “but she’s been living with us for 4 years!” Well, yes, because they chose to fight rather than turn her over.

Should the courts ignore the father’s rights and wishes because this family decided they wanted to adopt her? I don’t know the answer to that, but sensational headlines that say “girl removed from home because she’s 1/64 Indian” do not tell a truthful story.

This is BS.

My father is 1/8th NA. That means that he gets to live on the rez. He gets to vote. He gets to participate in the drum circle every Thursday night.

I’m 1/16th.

That means that I’m NOT considered a member of the tribe at all. I have no rights. I get no benefit. I am NOT a Native American.

So how in the HELL can they count this little girl? They wouldn’t give her any OTHER consideration for her race.
