Missed the point - we've been the lax adults and given them much that hurts us and helps them - they don't respect us for crap.
If we show some balls and insist on deals that are more equitable to us, let them throw their tantrums, then insist again, they will have no choice but to respect us or destroy us - our current methodology makes it more likely they will see weakness enough to leverage the "destroy" meme.
We give them little pieces of paper. They give us stuff. This is a loss?

If Congress passes a law to rescind a treaty or agreement with a foreign nation, and the President signs the bill, the treaty is null and void no matter what is in the language of the treaty.

The US and China are members of the WTO. The WTO agreements govern trade with China. Exit the WTO, raise tariffs on imported goods, and let the chips fall where they may.
So if you are buying most of your manufactured goods from overseas...
And you rip up all your trade agreements...
Then what happens to the products the American people are using. And buying in the meantime?

I support trade.
I don’t support so-called “free trade” agreements that are actually government-managed trade agreements.
There is a difference.

Were we? I could have sworn high tariffs played a huge role in sinking this country into a depression and brought about the New Deal. But that’s just me looking at history.
The trade agreements such as NAFTA and GATT are not treaties. They were brought into force buy the passage of laws in the usual way.
It's true that people often refer to them as treaties; but they are not.
He can't, and he won't. You have all sorts of contracts, business relationships, etc. Dependent upon that trade. Components manufactured in one country for use in another, etc. If you ripped everything up - which he couldn't do unilaterally anyway because - the disruption would be immense.
You'd have to pass something setting a repeal date a few years down the road.

It will improve the relationship for us. As for them, tough luck. We hold all the cards. They deal or their economies collapse.
And yes, the president can effectively tear up most trade agreements. Just find one of the thousands of cases where all our "partners" have violated the agreement and there's usually a way out.
Or you use some other law. For example the FDA could suspend imports of unsafe food. The president has plenty of options.

Correction, They deal or OUR economies collapse. Just because we hold the cards doesn’t mean we won’t be affected. Well, Trump and those at the top won’t be affected, but the rest of us will.
With Mexico, not a chance. Trump can crush them by cutting off wire transfers, they'll be at the table the same day. China is harder because Walmart and other traitor companies are in bed with them and will do everything they can to sabotage the negotiations.
Selective tariffs in areas where the US already manufactures comparable goods would stop the bleeding, then we tighten the screws on China. This sort of thing is Trump's bread and butter. He'll have the Chinese begging for scraps. It will just take a little longer.
By the way, very few technologically advanced products are manufactured in China. It's mostly garbage.
So you honestly believe by bullying these companies that are overseas, he can force them to come back? And what happens to, as one example, the wheat industry here in the US where 50% of it is exported? Just one example. What happens to all these US companies that export goods? This does go both ways.
In other words, we don’t have a “trade agreement” with China. Our membership in the WTO allows China to work off of our tariff book.
Yes, President Trump will have the power of executive order. I remember when FReepers looked askance at it.

That right there is a great post...That split started about the time GHW Bush took office...Would you agree with that? My father and i disagreed on these trade deals years ago...Bless his soul...He always thought the Republican Party would do the right thing and trusted them....He would come unhinged if he saw the party now...Glad he has been spared that.
A think there is a huge misconception about what Executive Orders are, and what they can do. Some people apparently think that you can do anything by Executive Order.
You can't. Executive Orders are orders to federal employees as to how to perform their duties. In some areas, a President can do a lot with them, especially in the area of federal contracting. But in others, they're very limited.
