When Colin Powell is referred to as a defense for some action or statement of a favored candidate on FR, we’ve lost.

Even if you think Powell is a liar does not mean that TRUMP made up the notion that Bush lied.

It came from the mouth of Bush's OWN Secretary of State.

You know what that means to me? The Donald is uninformed and trusted a liar and a liberal. We, on FR, knew better. WE had information that was easily obtainable.

Which shows the wisdom of Trump in disconnecting himself from it.

For heaven’s sake: Bush’s own brother, Jeb, finally concluded that GW was wrong.

I think the nation-building was illogical. I had no problem with the hit and the search and destroy.

Yup.

But Cruz repeats something he heard on CNN and HE'S a liar. Un-freaking-believable!

There’s nothing wrong with your believing that Trump should have gone to better sources than Bush’s own Secretary of State.

However, that is admitting on your part that Trump DID NOT make it up. He really DID hear it.

There was a lot of false intel at that time - see the Curveball informant fiasco - so just because it was on FR back in the day - knowledge moves forward and old rumors passed as intel gets disproved.

Yeah, if we were going to do anything, I wish it would have been more of an “in and out” operation a la Desert Storm. But according to the Bush Doctrine that would have been impossible, since part of the stated purpose was to take over management of the entire country. Personally I always thought that was a boneheaded idea that was doomed to fail, but I kept my mouth shut out of deference to our troops.

Huh?

Powell was CJCS from ‘89-’93. The invasion of Iraq was in March of 2003. How is it that these guys were somehow his staff and he picked them when we are talking a decade later?

The information that he presented at the U.N., such as mobile WMD labs and such was said to have been recent intel at the time, not many years old.

Disagree. Colin Powell earned it coming up through the ranks and as a combat commander in Vietnam.

His “massive force” doctrine is the correct way to fight a war at the beginning. I’d add “massive follow through” and “massive national participation” and “War declaration”, but I’m just an old softie.

It only makes sense if there is all out war, utter defeat, and unconditional surrender.

Japan was just as radical and religiously fanatical a nation in WWII.

They were utterly defeated and unconditionally surrendered. Within months Americans were walking freely in their cities and marrying their women.

We’ve been at these wars for 15 years, and there is no place that a sane commander would tell his troops: “You have weekend passes. Everyone go into town and have a good time.”

The entire world knew he had WMD. It was documented everywhere by everybody, and the UN voted to take him out. Enough of this shit.
