1. Whenever geneticists talk about "manipulating" or "switching on" things, I get nervous about them playing God. "Paging Dr. Mengele. Dr. Mengele, please pick up the White Courtesy Phone."
2. The fact that someone's intelligence is largely genetic has been proven time and again by researchers, this is simply the latest study published.
Intelligence is different from wisdom. Some people have IQs off the charts, but they are wicked people. The reverse is also true. True wisdom and discernment come from God.
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding." Proverbs 9:10
Intelligence is also a gift from God. He gives each of us different gifts. Some of us are given incredible beauty, some are given athletic ability, some are given musical talent, some are given higher intellect.
Where these discussion always get ugly quickly is when someone makes the logical connection that some races of human beings (who more closely share genetic code within their race). Dr. Charles Murry and Dr. Richard Herrnstein found this out when they published the book "The Bell Curve" in 1994.
So did Dr. Richard Lynn and Dr. Tatu Vanhanen when they published "IQ and the Wealth of Nations" in 2002.
I’m pretty sure I got some good genes when it comes to intelligence.
But what I need is a rich gene. Because I’m constantly questioning, “if I’m so smart, how come I ain’t rich?”
I think a lot about intelligence like this. First, I don’t think it brings anything to humans to categorize us in IQ hierarchies by race. Race is a stupid concept, and though there are some medical reasons to differentiate, I say, screw them, and let’s do away with the entire concept.
Back to IQ. My family has fairly high scores, and I’ve enjoyed raising some bright and very bright kids. But I have a special needs kid who doesn’t fall anywhere near them on that scale, and he is wonderful too. I am grateful to have learnt in the last 10 years how important we all are. How we need all kinds on this earth. How there are many kinds of jobs to do: human jobs as well as earning a living jobs, and how there are jobs for all sorts of people.
And that clarity of thought that high IQ gives you? Well, it’s limited too, perhaps. Both my parents were so smart, in different ways from each other, and both have been reduced to helplessness by Alzheimer’s. Hold intelligence as valuable but it’s not everything.
I probably lean towards the not so bright.
If you're like me, you get ALL of that! I've also been gifted with profound humility.
That wild haired guy in the photo must be an idiot. Doesn’t he know smoking is baaaaaaaaad for you?
