Also in Jerusalem today, my wife while hitching a ride was accused of being a terrorist. They are apparently dressing Jewish and it's making people paranoid. I found myself looking askance at several commuters and nearly reporting one.

There is body language, language, accent, catch phrases, attitude. It is about as hard for an Arab to pass as a Jew as it is for a Jew to pass as an Arab. The cultures are similar, but too different to easily fake.

Here, "hitching a ride" would mean standing by the side of the road with one's thumb out hoping to be picked up. What does it mean there, riding the bus or perhaps hailing a cab?

In Israel, everyone from age 10 to 80 hitches (’tramps’ in local idiom), although we generally use our index finger rather than our thumbs, because an extended thumb is a gesture similar to a middle finger here.
