I love guns. I love hunting.

But elephants are smart. I don't like hunting smart critters. Deer are dumber. They are more like antlered rats.

I'm not for hunting elephants.

I agree with you parisa, based on my understanding of the Dietary Laws in Deuteronomy and Numbers, and in the processes for shechita developed in Oral Torah and halakha.

While there is logic inherent in the principles of hunting to thin out an over abundance of species lest they die of starvation, I’ve yet to see a trophy of such an emaciated animal. That the elephant in this case, “Would probably have died”, is an assumption, and did not, in my opinion, justify its being thus taken.

I myself love shooting, but would not, outside of defense, bring it to bear against an animal.

I'm not for hunting elephants.

Nor am I......Truth be told, the only hunting I enjoy now is upland birds and I don't even get to do that anymore.

I've come across to many deer carcasses that were obviously wounded and never tracked down by their hunters and ultimately died of their wounds.

I don't like deer but I also don't like shooting and wounding an animal and leaving it to die in pain and since I can't guarantee a shoot and kill on my part, I gave it up.

I totally agree. SICK!

God defines morality, you don't. Since I answer to God and not to you, I don't care about your moral outrage.

Ann Archy, I remember that you are Catholic. How about developing a sound Biblical argument rather than some knee-jerk, emotional response?

There is nothing ethical about killing an animal to satisfy ones pride.

Pride is one of the 7 deadly sins.

What is your position on abortion?——Ok to kill babies but ‘save the animals’?——just wondering since there appears to be so many phonies on FR these days

Have you ever seen the damage that elephants can do to village gardens? Elephants can easily destroy a year's harvest in a single evening. Many villages in elephant hunting areas are barely above subsistence level. They cannot afford to have their fields destroyed. Elephants are mortal threats to villagers. African villagers view elephants like we do rats except that an elephant is thousands of times more destructive and dangerous than a rat.

They are NOT killed for MEAT or HIDES to keep warm.

Careful, you're allowing your emotions to blind you to facts.

The elephant meat taken in legal hunts is distributed to the near-by villages. Its meat will not be wasted.

Why do YOU think it's MORAL to kill these elephants??

Nice try at an evasion but it doesn't answer my question of you. Where did God say that hunting of this nature is immoral? For Christians, God defines morality, not you or me. Genesis 1:26 gives mankind dominion over the beasts of the field. Responsible conservation of elephants must include controlled hunting.

Hunting is not cruel.

Predation is cruel.

Therefore hunting predators is kind. Kill wolves and lions.

“I’m not for hunting elephants.”

Someone has to do it. In the areas where legal hunting occurs, the elephant herds are increasing. If the increase is not controlled by paid hunting, it is controlled by government hunters who kill entire family groups to decrease the population. It is extremely wasteful, because hunters are willing to pay hunting fees to keep the population in check. Legal hunting brings much needed resources to the region, and supplys jobs, instead of spending tax money to accomplish the same end.

The population has to be controlled, and it will be, one way or another. Legal hunting is the most humane and effective way to do it.

“Of the seven deadly sins, pride is the only one with a virtuous side. It is certainly a good thing to have pride in one’s country, in one’s community, in oneself. But when taken too far, as Michael Eric Dyson shows in Pride, these virtues become deadly sins.”

It is hard to see inside another’s heart from a distance. I do not think legal elephant hunting satisfies the criteria for a sin of pride, by itself.

The hunter followed the rules prescribed by the Zimbabwe government. He did not waste the meat, hide, or ivory; and he did something that needed to be done.

All pride is not sinful. Excessive pride that puts the person above God, is.

Idiot.

Ann Archy, weren't you the one on another thread who told someone to stop posting to you because he wasn't a gentleman? So that rule applies to him but not to you?
