"Isn’t the Pope considered infallible only on matters of theology?"

A comment to a reporter by a Pope has nothing to do with Papal infallibility. But as to your question, no, Papal infallibility does not attach to matters of theology, but rather to pronouncements on faith and morals.

Here's a good introduction to the topic if you're curious to know just what do Catholics believe about Papal infallibility (and the topic of infallibility generally):

http://www.catholic.com/tracts/papal-infallibility

By the way the church teaches very vigorously on the topic of conscience. A particularly excellent treatment of the topic can be found in St. John Paul II's Veritatis Splendor. Another great resource if you are interested in learning more about what Catholics believe and indeed about the Christian concept of conscience generally:

I'll paste in a quick exceprt and then a link to the whole section on conscience:

57. The text of the Letter to the Romans which has helped us to grasp the essence of the natural law also indicates the biblical understanding of conscience, especially in its specific connection with the law: “When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law unto themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them” (Rom 2:14-15).

According to Saint Paul, conscience in a certain sense confronts man with the law, and thus becomes a “witness” for man: a witness of his own faithfulness or unfaithfulness with regard to the law, of his essential moral rectitude or iniquity. Conscience is the only witness, since what takes place in the heart of the person is hidden from the eyes of everyone outside. Conscience makes its witness known only to the person himself. And, in turn, only the person himself knows what his own response is to the voice of conscience.

58. The importance of this interior dialogue of man with himself can never be adequately appreciated. But it is also a dialogue of man with God, the author of the law, the primordial image and final end of man. Saint Bonaventure teaches that “conscience is like God’s herald and messenger; it does not command from God’s authority, like a herald when he proclaims the edict of the king. This is why conscience has binding force”.103 Thus it can be said that conscience bears witness to man’s own rectitude or iniquity to man himself but, together with this and indeed even beforehand, conscience is the witness of God himself, whose voice and judgment penetrate the depths of man’s soul, calling him fortiter et suaviter to obedience. Moral conscience does not close man within an insurmountable and impenetrable solitude, but opens him to the call, to the voice of God. In this, and not in anything else, lies the entire mystery and the dignity of the moral conscience: in being the place, the sacred place where God speaks to man”.104

I can’t remember where to find it, but an analysis of one of Francis’ speeches said he stated that environmentalism derives from love for human life, no matter at what stage of existance that human life happens to be.

Therefore you can’t get to a truly “moral” position on environmentalism or climate change without first being ... Pro-Life.

And even this assumes that mankind has both the power and the inclination to drive the globe into a thermal runaway.

To cite this caveat means he has to be talking quite a lot about things that have to do with neither faith nor morals... does this sound like a “good pope”?

Pope Francis quickly realized he was set up by the Castro brothers in Cuba...who in concert with “Hate America” POTUS, Obama planned to force feed him to speak their creed, and weaken him in appearance and personal health. It was a cruel, devious and evil plan to use and abuse this Pontiff for their political gain!!!

Did you all notice how weak and frail the Pope was during the Mass in Philadelphia....the poor soul could barely walk and looked like he was totally burned on!!! But....he continued on, because I believe he realized his shortcomings in dealing with these low life human vermin!!!

And,,,,,God sustained him with energy because of his love for Family & Children!!! And....that is why he asked all to pray for him...always!!! Bottom line...he will do OK!!! To the Cubans in the horrible bondage and communist slavery of th Castro brothers.....fear not, for when Donald Trump becomes POTUS, he will liberate your island country to freedom, liberty and opportunity!!! The revolution to change the world for the better is now seriously underway!!! Have faith in our Lord and...his flock that do good things for the world and all its people!!!

The beauty of that is that Francis’ argument is steeped more in morality than science. You don’t even have to get into an argument with the Progressives over the science, you just stick to the morality and keep pointing out that the Pope’s position is that one can’t have a moral opinion on climate change without first being pro-life.

He made a statement at the UN and did mention “all stages of life”. A fairly tepid statement when in our country alone since Roe v Wade we are told 57,000,000 unborn babies have been murdered.

Frankly, the environmental problem we need to worry about most is the desecration of the Earth which is the ultimate receptacle for the blood and bodies of the murdered babies.

Perhaps you're thinking about this quote:

120. Since everything is interrelated, concern for the protection of nature is also incompatible with the justification of abortion. How can we genuinely teach the importance of concern for other vulnerable beings, however troublesome or inconvenient they may be, if we fail to protect a human embryo, even when its presence is uncomfortable and creates difficulties? “If personal and social sensitivity towards the acceptance of the new life is lost, then other forms of acceptance that are valuable for society also wither away”.

- Encyclical, Laudato Si

Thats excellent, thanks!

But i’m thinking of a variation of that within one of his speeches here in the US.

We were talking about what he may have said given the
platform he was gifted. He was strangely subdued about the abortion matter considering the scope of the evil we have committed.

Not to worry, I believe God will handle it since we ourselves and our political and spiritual leaders are not ending this.

We mishandled the Earth in the early part of the 20th Century and the Earth fought back with winds that left death and destruction in the center of our nation for almost the entire 1930’s—the “Dust Bowl”. For asking the Earth to accept the bodies of murdered babies it is frightening to think of what will follow.

“The earth fought back with winds?”

Sounds like a dangerous lack of glory to the Lord. That would give you trouble worse than a physical Dust Bowl.

The Lord gave us dominion over the earth. We are to care for it and there are natural laws operative. We destroyed the topsoil through irresponsible practices and we got the response. The Lord allows these laws to operate to teach us. If we stick our hand in the flame, it burns.

This still does not answer why a spiritual leader cannot aggressively address pure evil.

Keep in mind that this publication is a lot more authoritative than a speech.

I will look to see if I can find something along those lines in a speech.

Pope Francis said on Monday government officials have a “human right” to refuse to discharge a duty, such as issuing marriage licenses to homosexuals, if they feel it violates their conscience.

________________________________________ but they don’t have a religious right ???

this is about religious rights you atheist..

You are mistaken both in your view of "religious rights' and in your concluding epithet.

Religion and conscience are closely related but they are not two words for the same concept. The Pope correctly refers to conscience and correctly claims that it is a human right. Concience is the voice of God residing within our hearts and speaking to us. Our religion should inform our conscience but that does not make conscience a subset of religion.

In the US, some of the Founders tended to treat freedom of conscience and freedom of religion as the same, though others did not. Nevertheless that's not relevant to the Pope's statement because he was not commenting on the specific case of the US Constitution but on something that is true for all countries and all people.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't care for Francis' comments on climate or economics but I'm continuously amused by people on free Republic who take umbrage even at his most straightforward statements of Christian principle.
