My niece has a VW turbo-diesel that runs like a scalded cat. She doesn’t look forward to having it detuned to please the EPA.

For example, Federal safety standards and Federal emissions standards are often the biggest obstacles an auto company faces when it tries to meet Federal fuel efficiency standards. Removing many safety features and emission control hardware actually improves fuel efficiency.

Of course it does. Removing unnecessary weight will improve fuel economy.

Removing the seat belts and air bags will certainly improve fuel efficiency. So will removing the catalytic converter and the muffler.

Engineering, like life, always involves tradeoffs.

Lead in gasoline lubricated the upper cylinder, and had zero environmental effect.

The occurrence of every known disease condition was measurably lower when lead was in the gas. (not that I attempt to claim direct causation)

The removal of sulfur has been destructive in every way to engines. Removing the catalytic converters would have been a far better choice.

Environmentalism is killing everything.

Mine was fun to drive too. The transmission used to lock-up and throw everyone into the windshield without warning.

Lead lubbed the valve seats. There is no positive benefit to spreading all around. Most can get their MDR from leaded solder fumes while using their soldering station or left over pipe joints. Burnt Sulphur stinks.

Then don’t go looking for the spare tire in one of these new economy cars. That’s a big dead weight that has been jettisoned.

My son just bought a Passat Diesel. Runs GREAT, comfortable, plenty of power and GREAT fuel economy. It is Blutech. I have not one word bad about VW cars. I am only sorry they got caught. Anyone who can beat the feral gubment is a hero of mine.
