Very sad state of affairs, indeed.
I’ve often wondered how we got to that point myself.
If you have to pass a test to exercise a guaranteed right, then I think it really isn’t a right at all.
Kind of like the “right” to drive or the “right” to a living wage or the “right” to livable housing? LOL! Guess we shouldn’t laugh. There’s lots of cussin’ folks out there that believe those things.
Unfortunately, after the Civil War, when southern states had to re-write their constitutions Texas specifically cites the states right to control handguns (Jim Crow democrats didn’t want blacks to have handguns). Since this was written at a time when the seeds of “progressive thought” were starting to germinate in the US it was accepted as being in line with the US constitution.
For Texans we have a state constitution and 150 years of precedent that says the government can regulate handguns. Luckily we have a dedicated group of activists who work tirelessly to make that regulation less onerous.
Not to worry, “they” are slowly erasing the civil war so anything written with regards to something that never happened will have no validity. Or something.
I do not dispute your point.
But is voting a right? Because I sure as hell had to register to vote.
It might be good to reconsider police notification at *vehicular* traffic stops. There have been several incidents where a policeman pulled over someone for a minor traffic violation, and *at some point* during the stop, they pulled a gun and opened fire.
So where and when would this be useful?
If the gunman opens fire right away at the cop, it wouldn’t matter.
If the cop asked for permission to search the vehicle, it would give an honest person the *opportunity* to declare their gun, to avoid a “misunderstanding”.
If the person had a concealed weapon in the vehicle, and they neglected to mention it, it could be an additional charge.
If the cop saw a gun, or an indication of a gun, in the vehicle, and asked about it, again it could avoid a misunderstanding. Or at least the person if not allowed to have a gun, could let the cop know his intentions.
This needs some discussion and debate.
I much prefer that if a police officer carefully approaches me in my vehicle, I am able to quickly reassure them.
“But is voting a right?”
Actually it’s not. There is no “right” to vote mentioned anywhere in the Constitution.
L
Should there be a test for the right to vote?
“Because I sure as hell had to register to vote.”
The government needs to COUNT how many time you vote, or at least it should. Why should the government need to count how many guns you have?
Recent history has shown that telling an officer that one is carrying at a stop is an invitation for an officer to get an extra paid vacation.
We prefer “Mainers”; after all, who would trust a Mainiac with a firearm?
Yep. It is. Rights are not enumerated in the Constitution. Some are merely given protected status.
Hell yes!! And I'll write the test.
If it were only that easy. Imagine writing the test to be able to weed out the people you didn’t want voting.
LOL! Normally I would say no, but after what got elected last time I’m not so sure.
Let me begin with some very easy requirements.
1) Must be able to prove citizenship
2) All ballot instructions are in ENGLISH ONLY
3) Must be able to name who the current President, Vice President, Senate Majority Leader and House Majority Leader.
4) All Federal Taxes must be currently paid.
WELFARE RECIPIENTS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE TO VOTE UNTIL THEY ARE NO LONGER ON THE WELFARE ROLLS; NFW. PERIOD.
Be a citizen with minimal knowledge of office holders, pay your taxes, go to work at any or multiple part time jobs. PERIOD.
If I'm paying for your existence, you don't get to vote on how much you will receive from my taxes.
Voting is not a right, it is a privilege. Universal suffrage is a root cause of the trouble this country faces.
Subject to debate. Kansas passed the same law this year with the difference being in Kansas, you only have to inform the police you are carrying if asked.
