I remember when it got started. It actually seemed like a formalized version of one of those Robert G. Allen "Creating Wealth through Real Estate" operations. Of course, it had all of the usual Trump superlatives attached to it. Was it a rip off? Yeah, but no more than Amway (the GOP was fine with that guy running for gov of Michigan) and peddling time shares, or, for that matter being a high rolling portfolio manager selling sub-prime mortgages.
I don't trust Trump. I don't like his being a rah-rah cheerleader for eminent domain and public financing of big business enterprises.
I CAN see the appeal of hoping that someone like him can "go rogue" and put on the white cap, knowing he is on to the game.
He IS making the right enemies. At very least, he seems to be reshuffling the decks of both parties, which is something that I have been waiting for since 1996 (Perot and Buchanan were weaker attempts to force the populist realignment). Each time it failes, it ensures the ultimate upheaval will be more violent, and a lot more weird. It won't necessarily be good. Going on as is DEFIITELY is not good. Something has to happen before we go all French Revolution around here.
