To borrow a saying, arguing with a leftist is like playing chess with a pigeon. The pigeon will strut about, knocking the pieces over and crapping on the board. Then it will declare that it has won.

To borrow another saying, arguing with a leftist is like wrestling with a pig. You’ll end up covered in mud, and the pig will enjoy it.

“Question: How many of those 87 percent receive government funding “

Directly or indirectly?

ALL of them!

And it could also mean “87 percent of the ‘scientists’ we chose to ask, chosen because we had good reason to believe they buy this hokum, or would at least toe the party line”, in which case a mere 87% is actually pretty dismal.

First, does mankind have a material affect on the Earth

Some people would rather read off-beat websites than science papers. There are plenty of science papers all the way from the 50's explaining that the rise in CO2 is manmade, e.g. ftp://grads.iges.org/pub/klinger/CLIM690/revelleSuess57.pdf

These are written by recognized scientists. There are not many scientists backing the alternatives, probably a half dozen, and I have read them. The best explanation is that manmade CO2 is being steadily absorbed by the ocean. If there was no manmade CO2, then the oceans would be releasing CO2 as they warm from the Little Ice Age (and perhaps from Medieval warming). That rise would be 5-10ppm instead of the 120ppm and 2-3 more every year that we see now.

The next question is does the rise matter? Answer seems to be no, looking at all the science and evidence.

Question: How many of those 87 percent receive government funding and how many would take that same stance if they didn't receive it?

Most, and probably 100%. It is accepted science that the rise in CO2 is manmade.
