When I married a Thai gal in 1978, I translated some Thai documents for the visa application. The staff said I couldn’t do that and made me talk to the head consular officer. I told him I was Peace Corps and could read and write Thai well enough. Then we had a great chat and he wanted to know all about my experience.
He told the staff that I could do the translations. They weren’t happy about that, LOL. Made me use their typewriter to type them out instead of using my hand-written translations. He, he.
