“Maybe Capote wrote Mockingbird after all!”
I don’t really think there’s any doubt about that.
“Until comparatively recently in its history, Maycomb County was so cut off from the rest of the nation that some of its citizens, unaware of the Souths political predilections over the past ninety years, still voted Republican.”
“There was no finer young man, said the people of Maycomb, than Henry Clinton.”
I was just kidding. No, I don’t believe that.
So airflight was common in the 50s for ordinary people? Hmmm ....
And that puts Atticus Finch in his 50s during TKAM? With two small children?
Hmmm ....
Yes - does this person have an inkling of history? The unoccupied South never voted Republican until the 70s.
What nonsense.
Jean Louise (Scout) is an autobiographical character and I believe the original book was turned into the publisher in the 1950s or by 1960. The movie was released in the early 60s. And, yes, if you knew it book, Atticus Finch is in his 50s during the 30s with two small children. The episode that deals with his old age is the one in which he shoots the rabid dog.
My dad was 43 when I was born.
Thanks for posting this
I was really looking forward to reading this book.
After reading the reviews...not so much any longer.
Some memories are best left intact.
This kind of thing always happens. Sometimes publishers know more. There was a good reason this was probably not published.
I have been saying that if the writing is markedly different then TKAM was definitely written by Capote. To make it appear more like Lee wrote it is why it was changed to first person narrative. Just a hunch.
People are upset about Atticus. The possible evidence that Harper didn’t write it makes me sick. But her and “Sissy Britches”, as she called Capote, were best friends who leaned on each other. I can see him handing her the story. Or taking her Watchman manuscript and pulling out the characters and making it another book as was supposedly suggested by the publisher at the time.
This is total conspiracy theory. They were best pals until her book hit the bestseller list and continued far longer than In Cold Blood. Then he never bothered with her again. It wasn’t like Capote to hid his light under a bushel - particularly if he was responsible for an American classic.
And people who are crying on tv about the “new” Atticus: he’s a fictional character, people!
Capote was gay. I’d bet Harper Lee is lesbian. Thus the having each other’s backs.
I thought Mockingbird came out several years before IN COLD BLOOD. I know the Mockingbird movie came out first.
I’m only telling you what Harper Lee has said. I don’t remember the publishing dates.
No wonder you’re so sad! You see literary conspiracies everywhere!
Or maybe they were just neighbors and friends.
When did she say it? She hasn’t said much of anything since the 60s.
Being sad about the shape America is in has nothing to do with a couple of fictional books written by two oddballs.
And by the way, I loved IN COLD BLOOD and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. And I see a similarity in their styles. Apparently so do a lot of other people including so called professionals.
I’m always suspicious of someone writing one big hit then never picking up a pen again. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon come to mind.
I guess in your estimation, Truman Capote also wrote Gone with the Wind. She was a one-horse wonder, too.
I don’t know what makes you think Harper Lee was an oddball. She lived a quiet life in Monroeville & NYC on the profits of her amazing book. Considering the blowback about this “new” book, I can see why she never ventured forth.
If I was going to compare Capote’s writings to Lee’s, I’d use his southern tales rather than the merciless brilliance of In Cold Blood.
