"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race" — Calvin Coolidge

Got it saved as a favorite.

Coolidge should be considered the patron saint of the tea party. The man would have McDonald’s catering state dinners to save money if he were around today.

Ultimately property rights and personal rights are the same thing.

Agreed. Would recommend the Coolidge biography by Amity Schlaes. Very good.

“Coolidge should be considered the patron saint of the tea party. The man would have McDonald’s catering state dinners to save money if he were around today.”

Cal once threatened to fire the White House chef for cooking a whole ham for a state dinner.

Favorite Coolidge story:

Woman: "Mr. President, I bet I can make you say more than two words."

Coolidge: "You lose."

LOL One whit once said that seeing Calvin Coolidge smile was like watching the ice breaking up on a new England river in the spring. Alice Roosevelt said he looked like he had been weaned on a pickle.

Yep, he wasn’t known for being a happy looking guy. The picture I have on my wall is quite good, though — no grumpy cat features, just a sincere face.

As a student in the 50s, I can remember Coolidge and both his predecessor and successor being blamed for the depression. False. Harding inherited a recession in 1921 and did almost nothing to "boost the economy". Normal market correction solved the problem. Coolidge did even less, which gave us maybe maybe the best 10 years of the 20th century. Another recession hit in 1929 and Hoover did almost as much as Roosevelt (and Obama) to fix it. With predictable results.

“Favorite Coolidge story... “

Mine...

One Sunday Cal went to church where a well known preacher was expected to hold forth. Later he returned to the White House and quietly settled into his easy chair and began to read the paper. Mrs. Coolidge joined him and asked “Did you go to church today?” Mr Coolidge without removing his eyes from the paper replied “yep.” After about 5 minutes of silence she asked “was the preacher there?” Again the president replied “yep.” Another long silence and Mrs. Coolidge prods... “what was the sermon about?” Cal, eyes still glued to the paper, says “sin.” After another ten minutes of silence Mrs C finally tries one more time and asks “well what did he have to say about it?”

A clearly exasperated president Coolidge finally lays the paper down on his lap, looks at his wife and says...

“He’s against it.”

Frugal, conservative, and full of common sense. Calvin Coolidge epitomized what we New Englanders were before we became a bunch of left-wing loons.

LOL!

I’ve actually watched this several times on my big screen TV.
My wife looks at me like I’ve lost my mind because it puts her to sleep.

But can you imagine having presidents again that were just there to do their jobs and stay out of our way or only to occasionally give “boring” speeches that spelled out simple truths?

Coolidge was the last president to balance the budget every year he was in office. He reduced the national debt by about a quarter.

This is why he's hated and called "stupid" by the Left.

The Left is insane.
