Speaking as an attorney, if this were purely off duty, private conduct, then they have the basis for a first amendment lawsuit.
Any of this happened while they were on the clock, or in a public forum where they could reasonably be identified as police officers, then no.
Yeah, it is.
> Cops acting stupidly?
Probably more like observant but too stupid to keep their mouths shut. The Amish segment of the population do give us plemty of ammo to work with tho...
We need to keep in mind that cops see the bottom of the underclass, all day long.
Is it racist to notice that most of the criminals they deal with are black? It seems so.
Is it racist to be aware of how disfunctional most underclass black families are? It seems so.
Is it racist to notice how much of the black underclass hate whites, and start to reciprocate? Perhaps, but it is natural human response.
Florida is a right to work state. Employers can fire employees for any reason that they see fit. Other than specifically legally protected reasons such as race, etc - but those are easy enough to get around. You just don’t say I sm firing you because you are black - you say I am firing you because you are not a good fit.
But firing someone for their speech doesn’t violate 1A. You aren’t preventing them from speaking. Your are just not letting them work for you. That’s why they made the point of saying their actions were not illegal. Claiming their actions were illegal would have been a 1A issue.
If four black cops did this they would still have their jobs and nobody would say a word.
“The former fiance of one of them ratted them out.”
Is her name ‘V’ by any chance?
I am entertained that officers may falsely arrest, harass, beat, and occasionally kill and not lose their jobs, but send an allegedly racist text and your out of there.
And even the cops are seeing what the government bureaucrats are hiring as cops, along and the elimination of common sense standards.
Being a cop isn’t like other jobs, because of the tremendous power it gives them over citizens. So they can put any reasonable restrictions on those who hold that office. Not expressing bigotry toward a portion of the population they deal with on a regular basis is reasonable restriction, and no doubt police department policy states that. If you don’t get that, I can’t be any more clear.
Quite possibly, but they shouldn’t. Assuming that the characterization of the texts is accurate. I didn’t make a judgement on this particular case because they don’t give the details. I was speaking generally.
Well, if that is the case, I sure wish they would actually use those ideals (not like other jobs) before hiring the common joe that loves to demonize folks and raise money for their benefactors. Your ideas are from the 70’s and maybe 80’s but not today...
