Bing!
In a four movement piece, the third movement is usually a dance movement of some sort. Haydn and Mozart wrote minuets, but it was Haydn who developed the scherzo, which mans joke in Italian. The scherzo is a speeded up minuet that is almost one-to-the-bar. The scherzo, like the minuet, has the format AABBCCDDAB.
This movement is marked allegro assai, which means very quickly, 3/4 time, flips back and forth between C minor and E-flat Major, and is full of high spirits. He takes the word joke seriously. You cant listen to this without smiling.
At 2:26 the CCDD section in A-flat, known as a trio, dispels the fun for beauty. But we go da capo back to the beginning without repetitions. Even the quiet ending produces a chuckle.
The finale has more gags than a Jay Leno monologue. Haydn was a master at musical humor. One wind piece of his ends with a low B-flat on the bassoon that can only be the musical description of a fart. Beethovens humor has accents on the wrong place, a theme that goes nowhere, and he works it up into some of the funniest writing in the repertory.
Its in sonata format, marked presto, which means put the pedal to the metal, in 2/4 time and E-flat.
The first subject in E-flat is cute, but at 0:41, his second subject in B-flat is simply a run down the scale. Theres nothing much you can do with that, so Lou has the instruments follow each other like kids playing. It turns out sounding like the Campbells Soup jingle Mm-mm, good before the line is fragmented into something slippery-slidey. At 1:30 the exposition repeats.
At 2:48 its development time in the relative minor, and Lou spends it on the first subject because theres not much you can develop with the second.
At 4:13 the recap is in E-flat, the correct key.
But at 5:45, the piano suddenly lights on an E, considers the sound, and then veers into E Major with the second subject, which is absolutely the wrong key! The violin and cello follow him, mutter at him menacingly, and then in a Pee Wee Herman I-meant-to-do-that moment, the piano goes back to the correct key of E-flat. The others follow.
At 6:44 he writes a long coda to wrap it up with a bang.
