I see the Obama Administration passing on this case, just letting it quietly play out down in NC to whatever conclusion occurs.
If they turn this into a “hate” case they end up indicting a lot of their own allies; athiests, Progressives, various Progressive activist groups, etc. Which this nutcase seems to have been completely enthralled with.
They really don’t want a fight where the SPLC and others get accused of being the ones fomenting hate and violence. So it’ll be ignored.
