It was not sarcasm, but a serious question.
When the Oregon legislature pushed through the bill to allow gay domestic partnerships, the Catholic lobbyist showed up to ask for a tweak in the bill. The tweak had no impact on the main thrust of the bill. When asked if he opposed the bill, he said, "No, the Catholic church isn't in the business of discrimination." This occurred in the midst of many Christians testifying against the bill.
I'm still waiting to see a Catholic organization that upholds Catholic doctrine.
The Little Sisters of the Poor are in court right now. Several Dioceses are in court to over-turn Obamacare. There are some Catholic colleges are worthy of the Catholic. Franciscan University of Steubenville and Ava Maria are two that come to mind.
Non Catholics need to understand that with over a billion Catholics throughout the world, the Bishops and Pope do not control every single aspect of the life or any individual or institution.
It is also of note that only the malcontents are heard by the media. Right now the media has the idea that Pope Francis is going to change a lot of things. He won't and they will soon tire of him.
I was previously living in the Diocese where Notre Dame is. Notre Dame is a independent University not subject to the Ordinary aka Bishop. So the Bishop could and did strongly advise, plead and even threaten, but he really had no power to make them do anything, other then out of professional courtesy and brotherly fraternity.
Why not just deploy a fleet of undercover political officers, who can report on words spoken, attitudes, and other subversive activities. Maybe also check on everyone’s reading lists. None of this halfway Soviet crap.
