Gee, I wonder what other countries opined about the Colonies back in 1776? Independence is good for we but not for thee?

Enemies of England were elated, with several countries pitching in to aid the Patriot cause, most notably France. Allies of England were not so thrilled, and generally agreed with the English that we were “rebels.” The King blamed it on religion, terming it the “Presbyterian Rebellion.”

54-46 No - exactly the count on what I believe is the first county or whatever they’re called which reported on the election direct from Scotland as now being carried on C-Span3 - a relatively small region which nonetheless turned at an 89% rate - one analyst on air said that this county was expected to lean toward the yes vote, so this outcome is promising for the “no’s”......

Exactly! Good to see someone knows their history. I don’t understand the seemingly overwhelming “No” sentiment here at FR. If one is a true conservative and knows the politics involved, then England, without the currently liberal Scottish vote, will never elect a labor party to party.

Also the Scotland/England act of Union was rather forced on Scotland largely because of the failure of the economy after the Darien Scheme nearly bankrupted all of the nobility. It was negotiated and agreed to from a position of extreme weakness on the part of the Scots.

Gee, in the first place Scotland is not a colony, far from it in fact. It is essentially self-governing. Aside for that, do you think there might be a few differences between America /England in 1776 and Scotland/UK in 2014?

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Scotland. I’ve gotten the impression that it’s become more or less a dependency, with a very large percentage of the populace on the dole or otherwise wards of state in one capacity or another. That’s surprising, given the historical independent streak of Scots in general, but it is a very small population with little in the way of wealth generation outside of North Sea oil. If Scotland can stand on it’s own, it would be a boon for fiscal conservatives in England, is my read on the matter. But, only if Scotland can stand on it’s own, and that appears to be questionable. I’d love to see an independent, self-supporting Scotland, but maybe all of them self-selected and left for more productive countries? The reputation and the modern reality couldn’t be further apart.

Should this YouGov poll prove to be accurate I expect an even worse punch-up than usual in Glasgow city centre after the pubs close on Friday night.

However, if Scotland does vote “yes” one advantage would be that every woad-faced, ginger haired, haggis guzzling, whiskey addicted whinger north of Hadrian’s Wall will have nothing to complain about any more. (Although, no doubt, we English will be blamed for Scotland’s problems in perpetuity).

It would be a treat to see Alex Salmond’s face when an independent Scotland has to cut its welfare state spending. My main concern though is that the SNP would still find some way of getting the remains of the UK to pay for their socialist utopia.

Given that the last two Labour PMs were Scottish and Scotland’s leftist MPs in the House of Commons are often responsible for the passage of legislation which only hurts the English, I am very much in favour of freedom from Scotland.

Going to check in from time to time to see if it’s a done deal.

Go, Western Civilization!

(and kick out those damn Muslims already).

Polls are worthless in this kind of vote. People are pissed off so they say they will vote anti-establishment, but when push comes to shove, they vote the paycheck.

Well put. I’ve been to England and Scotland many times and some would have us believe this is about the Scots casting off their shackles of oppression or some such nonsense. The fact is, as you say, that England would actually be better off financially without the burden of Scotland. Overall, though, I believe “independence” would ultimately be a bad think for the UK and for the west in general, so I hope the nays will have it.

The betting markets have consistently had the probability of the NO vote prevailing at about 80%.

Buried under 'Bloggers/Personal' ? ?

Oh well .. Congratulations to Scotland on a very well-run process.
Compared to the fraud-ridden farces that many of our elections have become, it seemed that theirs had actual grownups charge.
Not to mention the extraordinary 85%+ turnout !

And whose fault was the weakness?. Scotland’s.

And its a Union we Scots have done very well out of. We’d have never attained the heights of the last 307 yrs alone. Being part of the UK made Scotland stronger.
