English is the language of business worldwide. It is the language of science and Technology. Refuse to speak it and you have limited your prospects to fruit and vegetable picking.
A consultant I worked with in education field was a “doctor of education,” and when his child was going into the first grade, it was evident that they only spoke Spanish in their home. I asked him why he did not teach his own child English, he glared at me and said “that’s YOUR job.” Multiply that jerk times 1,000.
That statement is simply not true. A teacher has a clear 1st Amendment right to speak out on matters of public interest. http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/cgi-bin/getcase.pl?navby=case&court=US&vol=391&invol=563&pageno=568 Expect a lawsuit to be filed within the next few months.
A Spanish-speaking American friend tried the same thing (though with nobler intentions); he and his Hispanic wife tried raising their children in Spanish (using the logic that if they learned English in school, they’d be truly bilingual at a very early age), but they gave up when they would take them to playgrounds (before they reached school age) and they couldn’t communicate with other children.
