THE SECOND COMING

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

William Butler Yeats (1865-1939)

Weather had very little or next to nothing to do with the spread of Bubonic Plague in the 11th through 16th centuries.
It was carried from Northern China to the Arabian Peninsula through trade routes and Mongol expansion during their wars of conquest. From the Arabian Peninsula to North Africa along the established overland and sea trade routes. From North Africa and the Middle East to Europe through mostly Italian City State trade routes aboard their ships and caravans. From Italy it eventually spread through out all of Europe and then to England. Russia and the Balkan States got it along their river and overland trade routes into what is today Mongolia and Northern China. Had little or nothing to do with climate or mutation; the plague was always there as a disease of rodents and other small mammals. When the Mongol expansion started and the trade routes opened up to a new and immunologically naive population; the rats and people carried the fleas and the fleas carried the plague bacillus, that equaled EPIDEMIC.

*What is motivating these people to do this at a time and place where it is almost impossible to come out of this unscathed?*

It’s a calling. Some people run away from a fire and some people run into the fire to see who needs help.

I think Dr. Nahid Bhadelia, of Boston, sums it up:
“I’m reminded of the Hillel quotation, ‘If not me, then who, and if not now, then when?‘ The need is great. The health care workers are overwhelmed, and more help can make it safer for everyone involved...”

The WHO reports over 60 medical personnel, mostly nurses, have fallen fighting this disease.

the latest fatalities are Dr. Sawyer, Liberia’s top expert, and a nurse who treated him, Dr. Sheik Umar Khan, Sierra Leone’s top expert, and three nurses working with him at Kenema, and Dr. Patrick Nshamdze and six nurses at the isolation center in Monrovia, Liberia. Heros, all.

>>”There is no strategic plan of how we’re going to bring this under control,” Garrett said<<

And why the hell not? I’m just a lowly RN but I know at least where to start, but the rich folks wouldn’t like it very much.

You shut down travel off of that continent first.
