I agree with the line from the article:
But its time for conservatives unconditional love affair with the police to end.
“Maybe if they took
badges and intimidating uniforms away
from them it might remove some of the
narcissistic cowboy bully types that apply
so they can carry a badge and a gun and
get the ladies. “
The military style nonsense is a big part of it. Dress and appearance encourage attitude. The average cop today came to me for a job, I’d refuse on the bouncer look alone. I don’t consider that a professional appearance. Not in a civilian environment.
Then there is this, two diffent recruitment videos. One is Maybury and Andy Taylor. The other looks like a SEAL video. It is actively recruiting thrill seeking thugs.

They tend to hire guys like
that for a reason. They need guys that are
take charge types who wont take a lot of
crap because they sure have to deal with
a lot of it. Just a thought.
But youre just referring to the so-call bad apple. It’s not just the bad cop causing issues.
There is a much bigger picture to see here.
What many Americans are finding quite disturbing and are questioning are entire departments ramping up into military style units, buying up military war vehicles, using military tactics etc.
In fact why is it we now have hundreds of times more SWAT military commando style teams than just a couple decades ago? Were talking even small rural departments now have their own military style swat teams. And look at all these govenrment departments, as they too have developed their own militarized units, like the Department of Education, etc.
Its to the point where they are being used in all kinds of situations, where they were initially ONLY designed for extremely violent people and or violent hostage situations.
Looking at the bigger picture and these trends are very alarming for those paying attention.
In the 1980s, about 60,000 people blocked doorways and hallways, keeping murderers away from their intended victims. Thousands of police officers came to these scenes, and made themselves direct accomplices to murder by removing the people who were obstacles to the murders.
NOT ONE Catholic bishop in America published a statement instructing the police not to make themselves accomplices to murder. A number of bishops ENCOURAGED the police to make themselves accomplices to murder—most notably John May of St. Louis.
When the “government” tells them to, American police KILL innocent people. They have done it in the past, and they will do it in the future. And they routinely murder innocent people every day.
Most men will commit any crime for a paycheck. The police are our enemies in this country, because the “government” is our enemy.

Ditto...
Your post is not congruent with the subject matter of the statement you refer to. You fail.
Some Departments pressure officers to write more tickets. Others do not. I talked to a Sgt. who said he wrote one ticket in 10 years, and that was only because someone screwed up so bad in front of him that he had to do something. My Department did NOT have quotas, and management never pressured officers to write tickets. So, not good enough still applies.
Correct.
“So you dont have the power to arrest anyone you see committing a crime?
Of course I do. But what happens next, if it’s a fellow officer in a corrupt department? You tell me.”
IMHO, your department should be forced to fire 50% of teh entire staff, all firings to be proportional - cops and maintainence alike.
When cops went Full Rambo, they became a risk to the public.
When cops won’t arrest crooked cops, while whining What good will it do?” the cop shop became a RICO situation.
I suggest finding work which won’t degrade and diminish you.
American tolerance for militarized cops is dwindling fast.
If officers wish to train hard, and keep themselves in excellent physical condition, I defend it. I support officers who keep themselves fit and able to do the job. Physically fit officers bother FReepers who are more comfortable with having "doughnut shop" cops to snark about.
A decision for a Department to have a SWAT team must have the permission of the Department Head. It does not mean that the individual officers view the public as a threat.
Other FReepers have chimed in and none of them have substantiated your post #4.

Good grief...What kind of cockeyed evasive robotic answer is this?
Gezzz...
“””A decision for a Department to have a SWAT team must have the permission of the Department Head. It does not mean that the individual officers view the public as a threat. “””
WT??
LOL!
“Bad cops are like homos; a small percentage of them make the rest of their kind look bad.”
Then where are those other good cops when bad cops do bad things? Nowhere, which means they are not good cops. Good cops would arrest and prosecute bad cops and they don’t.
Could you answer the question below instead of evading it? I'd love to hear your explanation.

Regarding this post, and posts #135 and #134, snark is not a substitute for honest discourse. We are done here.
Boy this thread sure gave the NSA good fodder...
Personally, I support the good cops and condemn the bad ones, because not all cops are the same and not all departments are the same.
I’m shocked and dismayed when I see the horrific behavior in so many different areas by so many stupid and thuggish cops across the nation, which is particularly difficult because I happen to live in a bubble of good cops in Boulder County, Colorado. I have many friends, some of who are very close friends, who work in the Boulder County Sheriff’s office. I’ve even done IT campaign work for one Boulder County Sheriff.
I’ve gone on many ride-alongs with a number of Boulder County Sheriff’s as well as the City of Longmont police, and I can tell they’re all going about things just like they have for hundreds or thousands of times before, not trying to act any differently because I’m there, and all I’ve ever observed was supreme professionalism. Of course, it does help quite a bit that both departments require college degrees of their applicants.
One of my best friends is a Boulder County Deputy Sheriff who’s about to retire, and observing him in action, it’s evident he’s the exact opposite of a cowboy or a gung-ho SWATer. In standoffs where no one is in danger but an individual stanoffee, he’s always told me that his strategy is just to wait around until the guy comes out, no matter how many days it takes, because sooner or later the guy is going to come out when he runs out of food, water, or gets tired of being cold in the dark if the utilities have come out. No need for any shooting or other unnecessary violence or action. Just simple waiting does the trick.
So, I see both sides: there’s great cops and great departments, and there are deplorable cops and deplorable departments. But seems like there’s an awful lot of thoughtless folks here who like to make ridiculous generalizations that ALL cops are evil thugs. Interesting though, that despite the accusations of people here being “cop lovers”, I’m only seeing that the others simply have balanced positions. The people here who seem to be unbalanced are the “cop haters”.
