During the Crusades, the Catholic church encouraged the orphans and destitute children to follow on with the Crusaders who were to liberate Jerusalem. This accomplished one major goal— it emptied some major cities of all of their children/beggar waifs. So, look to liberal Catholic political types within the dimocrat party... the Left dimos supplying the mechanism for this and the money, and on the US end the “help the poor children” campaign for amnesty. What happened to the Crusade children? When they got to the Mediterranean (which was supposed to part and let them walk to Islamic lands, but of course did not)some had boat passage paid for them by merchants (to Tunisia) who then sold them into slavery to muslims, and/or those who tried to reach the port to catch such ships starved to death along the way.
