Southern exposure to the Sun is the preferred method of solar heat gain! There are homes that have a narrow room with glass the full length with a rock wall which is warmed to the rear of the windows that will provide free warmth with attaching fans with thermostatic controls for on and off position! The Sun in the Winter hangs low and bathes the solar room. Southern exposure provides Sunlight throughout the day not just East or West.

I'm just a physical chemist, but I (and, probably, my insurer) would have concerns about something 'even' at a 'mere' 1,000 degrees F sitting atop my roof. (Consider the significance of 'Fahrenheit 451'...)

Wouldn't think you'd be bothered with ice dams in the winter, though... '-)
