If they want to be LEO they've got to start out small; shooting dogs and tazing old women.
“I wish more of them would consider the military when of age. The number of young GOP members who have served in any capacity in my area is atrocious.”
If it bore some semblance to a meritocracy more might consider it; when it became makework for minorities and women it became pointless. Obama wasn’t kidding when he said the troops were fighting for him; they serve under the president, even if he is a foreign Muslim. I can understand people joining the military only as an employer of last resort (and they should know the risks when they do so).
There...fixed it.
“Militarize the boy scouts, nice.”
Scouts might not have the membership woes they have in my area if they did that. Parents lost interest in scouting when they did less and less outdoors (and more and more fundraising). Sixty years ago the scouts were practically feeders for the military, not a bad idea considering there was a draft and many people would serve in the armed forces at some point in there lives. Of course, back then there was a country worth serving; you didn’t have our president apologizing for our leadership.
“They try that in the real world, though, under cover of the law, and theyll find out the difference between a soldier and a policeman, like those deputies in that Rambo movie. Many of the Iraq and Afghanistan veterans had four or more tours under their belts. And thats not even talking about special operators, intelligence, airborne, etc. I know guys that could eat 20 or 30 of those kids for breakfast.”

Roger That!
The Boy Scouts were never intended as a pre-cursor to a law enforcement or military career. This is just another attempt by a facist govt to mold the minds of the young to the power of the state. It needs to be stopped like many other things that are going on in this country.
Sadly I never hear any of our GOP legislators talking about it.
Serve under a Communist CiC. Never!
Hopefully not here.
Then go into elite units or be good at what you do. The navy nuclear program doesn’t pass duds of any color. Airborne training remains challenging, though less so; Ranger training is tough as is USMC officer training. This business about “Obama is a POS therefore I am not going to serve” is baloney, IMO. Young patriotic men should go do something in uniform if they qualify. If for no other reason than they may need the training if we have a civil war.
There are a lot more reasons to stay out of the military besides “Obama is a POS”; his predecessor sent Americans to kill (and be killed by) Muslims while calling Islam a “religion of peace” (as a Christian I know that is nonsense - non-Muslims have no peace anywhere Muslims make up even 1/3 of the population). This country wasn’t built with a large standing army in mind; if the Huron and French go on a tear again I’ll sign up with the Jersey Blues and defend our homes. People can prepare themselves better for a civil war by hunting/fishing/camping in nearby areas; that is where it will happen, and those will be the tools at their disposal.
A friend with two children who signed up (as the employer of last resort - no “patriotism” was involved) was concerned that her son might be injured/killed while he was in the Arabian peninsula. While I certainly understood that sentiment, she had no concern that her son might kill somebody he had no reason to kill (because the political mood of the day dictated so). Anyone who turns over their freedom to Caesar best be prepared to live with the consequences of doing that.
It the concern is killing somebody, then go into the majority of occupational specialties that don’t involve that. Become a corpsman, medic, etc. As regards hunting & camping as a substitute for military training, that is absurd. The Croats who fought the Serbs had military training; the Finns who defended their freedom did so with military training. The BSA’s pioneering merit badge won’t cut it. Again, the bottom line is that the country needs young men to serve in uniform. If you take a pass, take a pass; don’t get sensitive when somebody points out you took a pass while the McCain and Hunter sons were on the front lines. Some families serve; others sit on their ass and watch.
“If you take a pass, take a pass; dont get sensitive when somebody points out you took a pass while the McCain and Hunter sons were on the front lines. Some families serve; others sit on their ass and watch.”
I’ll go a step further; I’m feeding, clothing, housing, and schooling the McCain and Hunter’s sons. I’m paying their fathers’ salaries as well. The money is gone; workfare is finished. Nobody in uniform today has done anything to protect me; they are serving others’ interests. If the military was securing our country instead of empire-building overseas, I might consider your points valid; as long as the Tsarnev brothers (despite warnings from Russia) can kill people here then don’t pretend those in Afghanistan are “fighting terrorism”.
The enemies that defeated us in Lebanon, Somalia and Iraq(and are defeating us in Afghanistan now) are doing it without formal military training.
