The shootings were the best recruiting tool the SDS ever had

Good point. I recall reading about the Easter 1916 IRA uprising in Dublin. The rebels didn't have much sympathy among the general population...until the British started executing the rebel leaders. Then public support started to move in the direction of the rebels.

I suppose there is a lesson in there somewhere.
