Do these Canadian folks buy an insurance policy that is usable in the US, or do they pay out of pocket?
Either way I’m impressed that they have the financial savvy to be able to do this.
I assume a lot of us older Americans will be heading to offshore providers to over-ride the Death Panels in the next 10 yrs.
Well, to start with, another $1.6 billion in taxes distributed across a population of 620,000 translates to $2581 per capita -- or about $9000 per household.
In other words, having "free" health insurance will cost Vermonters something over $200 per capita per month (or about $750/month per family).
And, as we all recognize, that's almost certainly an optimistic estimate.
I assume they are paying out of pocket but I suppose they could have some sort of supplemental policy.
No, no, they're thinking about making it a tax on employers. It won't cost the average Vermonters anything.
Do I need the sarcasm tag?
Oh wow. That is going to be a disaster. The state taxes are going to have to be raised A LOT!
Which would leave Vermont with how many employers? And how many employees? And would state, county and local government employees count?
This could get reallllll ugly, real fast...
Canada also has the luxury of being protected within the American security umbrella, and thus gets away with spending minimal amounts on defense. An American single-payer system is impossible for this reason—we can’t essentially demilitarize the way Canada has.
