I don’t think the tsunami has arrived:

23:48 | SHOA: Arica (2.17 meters), Pisagua (2.26 meters) and Iquique (2.55 meters) recorded so far, the largest tidal amplitudes

The ‘main’ wave will arrive in about 15 minutes. Prayers that everybody’s up high, and not in landslide areas, as there have been landslides.

This thrust fault quake should actually cause a bigger tsunami in NZ potentially than Chile.

Earlier, Honduras was on the watch list - inexplicable - unless the fault runs West to East, and seismic teleconnection happened.

They are evaluating Hawaii..

Man, I just went through one of those at work recently. I hope Hawaii fares better than I did.

Thanks for the great links machogirl. Just returning from a B-day party myself. ;)

Did you notice the USGS lowered the initial report to 7.8 from 8.0 as usual for them? I've suspected a -0.2 fudge for sometime. Now they've upped it by +0.3 above the original report. Very unusual for USGS to do that. Maybe someone got religion as the tsunami heights are calculated from this data (i.e., too low of a report could cost lives)?

Anyway, tinfoil hat off now... ;)

That general area was the location of the greatest earthquake in the 20th century: a 9.5in 1960 that killed over 1,600 people. The same tectonic forces that created the Andes are still very active as the Nazca Plate is being subducted under the South American Plate. That one generated some headlines.

All tsunami watches and warnings previously issued have been canceled except for tsunami warnings for Chile and Peru, the Pacific Tsunami Center announced.

by CNN’s Steve Almasy 9:44 PM

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center is “still evaluating” whether to issue a tsunami warning for Hawaii in the wake of a large earthquake off Chile’s coast, said Charles McCreery, the center’s director. He estimated that a decision will be made within about an hour. He said an advisory could be issued indicating threats for swimmers due to strong currents, “but no real flooding of the land.”
