For 60 years there have been slides there, and nothing much could be done to prevent them.
Yet... John Pennington, head of Snohomish County's Department of Emergency Management, said at a news conference Monday. It was considered very safe, Pennington said. This was a completely unforeseen slide. This came out of nowhere.
To: Izzy Dunne
Maybe John should take his feet off his desk, stop figuring his retirement statistics and read the 1999 report.

They knew that hill was sliding, but never imagined it would cross the river. They were more interested in granting building permits for houses they could garnish more tax money from.

That’s always the case. Think N.O. & Katrina. Thing S.F. and the next BIG ONE. I hope a Republican administration is in place to take care of the medical logistics. The rest of the city? I’ll let you folks make the call.

To: Izzy Dunne
The 2006 slide took place in winter, on Jan. 25. Three days later, as the new channel cut the land, residents and agency staff reported the eerie sound of trees constantly snapping as the river pushed them over, wrote the Stillaguamish Tribes Natural Resource Department on its website. But the sound of construction competed with the sound of snapping trees. They didnt even stop pounding nails, said Tracy Drury, an environmental engineer
Amazing.
So... what is Pennington covering up?
Is he getting paid under the table to approve dubious projects?
Did he think the 2006 slide cleaned the place up so it wouldn't happen again for a long while?
Is he just incapable of reading?
What?

Might as well start blaming Obama for everything right here, right now. So from now on, it’s all Obama’s fault.

The national media has been asleep on this story. Why? Is the missing Malaysian jet that spectacular that 100 people missing in this landslide is to be ignored? They’re ignoring it because it is yet another example of a dismal failure of government.

100% true...yet we're somehow supposed to stop "global warming?"

Yeah and it doesn’t bode well because it’s not yet a full-blown case, although it could be just around the corner. Even though their not my symptoms, the toll taken feels like it’s been too close to home.

Just read a couple of Seattle Times articles. LIDAR imaging shows slides going back 14,000 years along this stretch of escarpment above the Stillaguamish River.
To: ProtectOurFreedom
Yep, that LIDAR map is astonishing! Anywhere along there might let go at any time.

The dead so far include loggers, truck drivers, satellite dish installers, mothers, babies, a retired Navy commander with four children. I don't know about Snohomish county voting records, but these are mostly blue collar people that work for a living, not the commies in King county and Seattle. Your statement makes no sense, in fact it is quite hateful.

Well, what can I say, imagine a guy from Maine confusing King County and Snohomish!
If Snohomish County voted Republican, I am heartily sorry. If your County voted Democrat, and your officials are Democrat Appointees, hold the apology for some other cause.
BTW, the very existence of that 1999 report makes the instability of the area a disclosable issue in a real estate transaction. So what you have in your County is official malfeasance in office combined with private lapses in due diligence. Even in Maine, that generally can have fatal consequences. Don't waste anger on me, even if I am an insensitive oaf.
Be very mad at the officials who allowed subdivision and development in that area. When they signed the permits, they signed death warrants.

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of such hills in Western Washington.
100% glacier sh!t with no bedrock.
If you evacuated around them all there would be no place to live.

Weren’t there boobs whom bloviated the same BS after N.O and Katrina? (And, IIRC, there has not been a trail/trial re: where the $$ went in N.O.)
