Yep. There are a lot of reasons not to hire them. It’s a matter of personal values. I’ve made my share of mistakes and I’m awfully glad someone was willing to take a chance on me. I’ve decided to pass that along.

The problem as I see it is that we were not allowed to interview, look at records and make choices. The company I worked for had to hire 350 employees off the welfare roles. We didn’t have choices as to which ones. (The deal was the city gave us the plant for $1/year. They made up for it by charging $30,000/month for the electricity, though.) If we could have evaluated each man it probably would have been different, but that might have been “racist.” Although, the one actual on-the-floor fist fight was between two whites. But the drug tests failed only the blacks. The decision was made to stop drug testing as anything that divides people by race is automatically defined as racist. (Frankly, I think this was wrong and a mistake. We could have solved most of our problems by using drug testing.)
This was a defense plant and that’s probably not the place to put an ex-con you can’t evaluate. Some of the employees got angry at management and numerous sealed units came back filled with urine. It had to be introduced on the production line. It cost thousands of dollars.

Oh, you know, I forgot what is probably the most important point. None of these former convicts wanted a job. They were perfectly happy on welfare. They were angry and resentful. It was obvious and that is probably the thing I’d look for if hiring a former convict.
I have a Christian friend who runs Classic Consoles. He hires only ex-cons (roughly 30) and has a wonderful record. I spent several hours there and from watching the body language I got the impression that at least one and probably two of the men keep everything honest and calm.

Um... the manufacturer gets paid by the US Treasury upon receipt of the good. This is an issue between the shipyard and the contractor.
