Many in the audience are self appointed Gods up to the moment when they take thier last breath and all of a sudden they call his name, funny hypocrites who think they are larger than they appear but are smaller than everyone around them, sad a##es for sure
MM has been the darling of the “science is my god” geniuses since his character on HBO’s True Detective has been given to long rambling nihilistic speeches about the emptiness of the universe and the meaninglessness of existence. Today those people are sad, sad, sad.
As for Rust's philosophy -- he's a seriously disturbed individual. The discussion of philosophy makes that clear to us. It's all part of what makes the character interesting. It's obvious that we're not supposed to emulate Rust -- who'd want to wind up like him?
McConaughy’s performance is up there with DeNiro’s Raging Bull. In fact, in a way it’s similar. Check it out for yourself.
