Why would it be strange? For Poland, Ukraine is a vital buffer state. The one thing none of Ukraine's western neighbors wants is Russian troops on their border. Russia always gives this nonsensical line about needing vast territories because it has been invaded in the past. The reality is that Russia has done a lot of its own invading, and every one of its neighbors has had to deal with Russian aggressiveness including, most recently, over 4 decades of totalitarian rule under murderous communists handpicked in the Kremlin. Vis-a-vis Poland, Russians invaded Poland more than once, signed the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact that paved the way for the Holocaust that killed millions of Poles, slaughtered more Poles at Katyn, were responsible for deliberately giving time for the Nazis to crush the Warsaw Uprising and finally imposed decades of totalitarian rule on Poland. Nothing the Ukrainians did - in the course of being attacked on all sides - can hold a candle to Russia's history with Poland.
Another bit I find especially amusing is the story about how Russia contributed enormously to Nazi Germany's defeat. It's literally true, but only after Russia contributed enormously to Nazi Germany's victories in the West by signing the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and serving as Germany's quartermaster for its blitzkrieg on the Western front. In effect, Russia helped put out a fire it helped set, but only after it had burned down much of the neighborhood and killed many of its neighbors (in the form of battle and concentration camp deaths in territories that would not have been conquered had Russia not given the Germans a free hand).. Ultimately, today's Russia is what Germany would have been like without a de-Nazification campaign. Russians think they saved the world, when they poured gasoline on it and struck a match. After WWII, they continued with a wicked campaign of spreading Godless totalitarianism with guns and Stalin-worshipers while urging the mass murder of class enemies. While I understand the tribal reflexes of ethnic Russians and pro-Russian Slavs, non-Russian Russophiles are overlooking a lot of things.
History shows that supporting the Russians against the Nazis was a terrible idea, since they went on to enslave Central Europe for over 4 decades, killing millions of "class enemies". Note that the Russians made WWII possible by giving the Nazis a secure eastern flank via the Molotov Ribbentrop Pact. In that respect, they were partially responsible for 400K GI deaths in WWII. After WWII, the Russians were responsible for 100K GI deaths via their financial and material support for Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese communists who would have been crushed without that assistance. North Koreans and all of Vietnam are still paying the price for Russian perfidy. Compared to the Russians, al Qaeda are a bunch of choir boys. Add up all the direct and indirect US casualties from Muslim attacks, and it's less than 20K. Do that for Russian back-stabbing, and it's 500K.
