Ukraine’s immediate problem is that it is on the edge of economic collapse. To become a normal nation anchored in the global trading system, Ukraine will have to endure decisive and deep economic reforms, including state spending cuts, privatization, and the implementation of a tax system that is simpler and less loophole-ridden.

“The problem is, the people will likely hate the politicians brave and honest enough to implement those reforms,” Semykoz tells me. “We need now a generation of political kamikazes, who, like the protestors on the Maidan are ready to risk their future by doing the right thing today.” It’s not clear whether any such leaders are ready to step forward in Ukraine.

*****************************

Never did I think that I would get America confused with Ukraine!

Thanks for an informative, and perhaps prophetic, post.

I had the same reaction to parts of the story. At some points like:

Regimes can stay in power in an age of mass media only if they have enough murderers willing to gun down people in the street. Snipers were willing to kill their fellow countrymen in the streets...

I kept going "oh, wait!"

The main take away from this story is that regimes all over the world are becoming unstable as the economic collapse comes closer to reality.

".........The world cries, and rightly so, that the demands of those marching in Kiev be heard today, and sanctions against the Ukrainian government already are being enacted. But there is an awkward silence on the subject of those who are on the march in Caracas. Perhaps that has something to do with the Western intelligentsia’s shameful embrace of Chávez and Chávezism and their subsequent ambivalence about the immediate and entirely foreseeable legacy of that embrace. Who can forget the Reverend Jesse Jackson’s praying at Chávez’s graveside as Sean Penn and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad looked on? Or Representative Chaka Fattah and other Democratic grandees eagerly accepting gifts of discounted Venezuelan heating oil on behalf of their constituents? Representative José Serrano’s paean to the dictator as a man committed to “empowering the powerless”? Oliver Stone’s praise of the “great hero”? The lionizing of the authoritarian regime by Harry Belafonte and Danny Glover? Barack Obama’s physically clinging to the man who would later denounce him as a “clown”? The descent of Venezuela into autocracy and misery has been enabled in no small part by American elites and by elected members of the Democratic party specifically. There should be a reckoning for that fact. ............"

Media sycophants of a corrupt Marxist regime, stooges supporting elites with Michael Jackson style adulation, a tax system that is corrupt with agents that harass citizens and eat out their substance, as some citizens are getting serious about putting individual rights and freedoms at the center of their political system. Here’s hoping that ….., &…... will now step forward to help these freedom-loving people succeed in their aspirations.

Here’s hoping. Hope & change.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Happy-face Marxism, John Funds?

Absolutely true and depressing.

But don't forget the involvement of the American Press.

They are the enablers of all the evil: deaths, impoverishment, suffering, caused by the Left.

They cheer the evil and ridicule the good.

They are the Beast of Revelations.

For some “silly’ reason that phrase we’ve been seeing lately: “At least the police officer got to go home safe and sound to his family”, popped into my head.

Perhaps all it takes in a ‘regime change’ situation like in the Ukraine is that the realization that that going home ‘thing’ might not be occurring tonight. That in turn makes the ‘security agent’ think about what they are doing instead of just blindly following orders.

Excellent article. Which has importance for our own situation here in the US.

The Ukraine leaders experienced something like the Ceausescu Moment.

Are we approaching Obama’s Ceausescu Moment? And the MSM with him? Will we have another Great Awakening in the US. And a cleansing purge with it?

God help the US.

Guess we shall see.

"But don't forget the involvement of the American Press. They are the enablers of all the evil: deaths, impoverishment, suffering, caused by the Left."

Every evil thing going unchecked in America and much of the world is the direct result of our dishonest, corrupt, blatantly biased Mainstream Media.

Many people have said that evil runs rampant because good people do nothing but true of the matter is that most the time good people sit idly by because they are not told the truth about what's going on!

Our media was given constitutional protections because the founders recognized the importance of keeping the people informed because most people will do the right thing if they are simply told the truth. Unfortunately the media has abused its power at every turn and in my opinion hold power over the most evil and corrupt institution on Earth.

If it wasn't for all the lies the media shoves down the throats of the people all over the globe, much of the evil in the world today wouldn't even exist, because the people wouldn't stand for it!
