Sheriff departments, police departments need to be eliminated and the policing duties turned over to the state police.

But I do like the idea of having the chief law enforcement officer being directly elected by the people, as is the case with the sheriff.

Jeeze -- Was the cop trying to kill him?

Maybe the department has a quota?

Noting official, mind you, it just happens that the cops with the most tickets and corpses get the most paid leave and promotions...

Here in the south we have so many small towns that hire police far out of proportion to the population and where there is very little crime. When a call finally comes in they swarm to the scene and act like apes. You see three and four cars out on an interstate, where they don’t belong anyway, for a speeder stop.

I think it's Federal grants - they make up a grant name like "Drunk Driving Prevention" when all it does is funnel more money to the police and by-pass local control. Who doesn't think the government wants a police state?

Well it’s like the old adage. If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

No, Mr. Cop. Not every problem is a crime.

But (and you are free to disagree, but this is what I note) liberals are often would-be Christians with no Christ and are trying to do it in the flesh.

I don't see that at all. Let me ponder the implications.

I’d sooner pay for preachers!

Preachers can only reach those who agree to listen.

A real money saver would be to eliminate (or drastically scale back) the various welfare programs. The prime source for criminals are single-mom households on welfare. Make it less viable for single women to have kids on welfare.

What state run church would you establish for that?

Who doesn't think the government wants a police state?

That's all too common, and it's otherwise known as ego and pride. One wouldn't accuse George Washington's government of that, but again if you'd met George you would have seen a humble man, in fact humbled through the way he struggled to keep his own hot temper in bounds by means of biblical wisdom. (Not every handicap ends up being to the ill in the end.)

The antidote for ego and pride (which is self centered) is love (God-directed). Somehow the corner into which America has painted itself, needs an exit door. The gospel isn't chained. People who care passionately about God will convey that passion to others and it will go "underground."

I’d sooner open things up so that more private funds could go to preachers. A really radical solution would be tax CREDITS for charity, not just tax DEDUCTIONS. After all, a dollar that would be spent on do-gooding, might as well be directed by the donor, not by bureaucrats in Washington (or to a lesser extent, the state capital). See, you too are thinking “in the box.” Gospel thinks “outside the box”!

Why stop at the state borders?

Mexico has a great system where the police work is done by the Federales...

In many communities calling for an ambulance means the police will be dispatched FIRST.The caller is neither notified nor given a choice.

Today’s police are either trained or under the impression that on their arrival everyone must immediately comply totally with any order of the officer ,no argument or explanations needed or tolerated. The officer must “control the scene”. Today’s police are way too aggressive;certainly nothing like most officers of my youth.

Preachers can only reach those who agree to listen.

They are but agents of God's voice... God can very well get people into a position where they know they will benefit to listen.

EMT training should be part of police academy. It doesn’t take that long, nor is it that difficult.

Are there any paramedic societies? They could step up and have a say about the inappropriate priorities here, and let legislatures know so that it isn’t just what the police department feels should be done, it’s law!

Elimination of local police and centralization will ultimately lead to worse problems.

It seems that modern cop craft is based on the premise that everybody you meet is a crook.

(And it’s apocryphal, but it’s said that everybody violates 3 serious laws daily.)

See, you too are thinking “in the box.”

Actually, I thought you might be thinking in the box, my question was intended as a gentle reminder that there is a box there.

Why would you advocate tax credits? Does McDonalds need a tax credit for money spent on Big Macs?

Is there a tax credit for buying a book, a Coke, a shirt or charcoal?

Where a preacher actually fills the need, they will have a thriving congregation regardless of any tax credits or penalties a government may seek to impose.

Are there no churches in China?

I agree with your observation. All local governments have to do to remedy the situation is to cut the budgets to their respective LE departments, raise the hiring standards and compensation. ie go for quality over quantity.

So many times, I see a car pulled over and there are 3 or 4 back-ups. That tells me there are way too many patrol cars and officers on the street with nothing to do.
