Put in four years at that deal (plus Guard/Center on offense) myself but didn’t get a solitary concussion in spite of some collisions that got the crowd going OOOOOOHHHHHHHH.
Only things I can credit are 1) the very first thing we all learned was Tackling and 2) after I busted three of our brand-new plastic helmets during practices the two weeks after we got the things, the Coach put me on the permanent list for a leather one.
No Studies, scientific or otherwise, to prove it, but I still believe that there was just enough give in the outer shell of that old leather headgear to give me that edge.
