Agree.
Back in the early days of the internet when you could find anything/anyone, I exchanged a few emails with Jonathan Pollard. He was already in jail. I was doing genealogy research and my great grandmother’s maiden name was Pollard. She was from an old tidewater Virginia family. He had no idea why he was named Pollard. I wish him well. The word “pollard” btw, I have since learned refers to the middle age practice of pruning trees to grow over decades, the long straight poles needed to build houses common at the time.
Robert Hanssen was an FBI agent, an Opus Dei member and a spy for Russia against the USA.
Merry Christmas Nachum, to you and yours and they and theirs in your ping list.
Jonathan Pollard was a civilian American Naval intelligence analyst. In the mid 1980’s (circa 1983-1984), Pollard discovered that information vital to Israel’s security was being deliberately withheld by certain elements within the U.S. national security establishment.
Israel was legally entitled to this vital security information according to a 1983 Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries.
The information being withheld from Israel included Syrian, Iraqi, Libyan and Iranian nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare capabilities - being developed for use against Israel. It also included information on ballistic missile development by these countries and information on planned terrorist attacks against Israeli civilian targets.
When Pollard discovered this suppression of information and asked his superiors about it, he was told to “mind his own business”, and that “Jews get nervous talking about poison gas; they don’t need to know.”
He also learned that the objective of cutting off the flow of information to Israel was to severely curtail Israel’s ability to act independently in defense of her own interests.
Pollard was painfully aware that Israeli lives were being put in jeopardy as a result of this undeclared intelligence embargo. He did everything he possibly could to stop this covert policy and to have the legal flow of information to Israel restored
Several CIA Chiefs have come out and said Pollard has served much more time than Ames, and others who spied for Russia an enemy.
Clinton promised to release him and in true Clintonian fashion didn’t.
In view of time served 3 times longer than the Plea agreement with Shimon Peres, Pollards ill health and as James Wolsey said the passage of time, let Pollard go.
The USA forced Israel to recently release over 100 murdering terrorist, but we can’t release a guy who never was involved with pro Russian espionage just info America agreed to hand over to Israel.
What if Israel wouldn’t have destroyed Iraqs nuclear plant?
What would the world be like today?
And a Merry Christmas to you and yours :)
Bibi is being a hypocrite today by saying “friends” don’t spy on friends and then demanding the release of Pollard. Unless he is saying the US and Israel are no longer allies.
He’s saying that if you want us to commit suicide, we are not going to do it willingly.
Exactly.
On freeing Pollard, President Reagan and Caspar Weinberger had no problem with him getting a life sentence. I’ve never heard of it happening but I wonder what the reaction would be to the Palestinians demanding that Sirhan Sirhan be released?
That’s interesting — looks like a safe bet, that Zero can’t do this politically, but look at his pattern, he will now use that as a truncheon. Thanks Nachum.
