I am from just a little bit north of Vivian, in Arkansas. I am 65 years old.
We farmed, among other things. At harvest time we hired ANYONE who could pick cotton or field peas. (blackeyed peas to non farmers). The blacks that worked for us seemed happy to have work. They, mostly women, worked their tails off. They would bring their small children with them and let them ride on the cotton sacks.
It's been many years now but I still have nothing but respect for those people. I never SAW any mistreatment of blacks or anyone else.
In that place at that time people were glad to have any kind of work and, conversely, we were glad to find help.
In those days my Mother was in poor health and we had household help. They were black women. They seemed to be happy to find work, and made some of the best southern foods I can remember. I always hated grits, and caught a lot of flack.
Phil is only a couple years older than I and since he hails from Vivian, he probably knows some of my cousins. Several of them grew up in Vivian and went to school there. The last time i was there was 1964, and racial trouble was just starting.
I have to agree with Phil and support him in this assertion.
I also support him in his interview with GQ magazine. They asked him a question and he told the truth. If you don't want the truth, don't ask.
