The left adores those who can lie to "the masses" and get away with it. That's why they lionize Bill Clinton.
Those who lie and don't get away with it are not treated nearly so well. If they're caught in a big lie, they can damage "the movement" by hurting its credibility. This is a big no-no, and is one of the reasons why those caught with their pants down (like Penn State's Michael Mann) fight like cornered tigers.
I think some of the Duke 88 may have been given a signal - I have no idea what form that signal might have taken of course - that they should move on, at were. Their antics, their association with a cause that was most profoundly embarrassing to Duke, their association with Mike Nifong, etc., was not helpful to Duke.
The fate of people in this category is not pretty, but they usually do all right when sufficient time has passed. They become un-persons, but there are lots of places within the left-wing hive for un-persons to survive in relative comfort.
