Washington DC used to include a portion of Northern Virginia but it was retroceded in 1847.
Be careful what you wish for, because that deal would undoubtedly include full statehood for DC with one rep and two senators, all screaming liberals.
They already have two Senators and a Rep -- in Virginia itself!
If anything statehood would give Republicans the two Senate seats in Virginia.
I read somewhere that the Republican Party shifted their support from Virginia to New Jersey.
McDonnell and his wife accepted very expensive gifts and "loans" from a businessman who suddenly became McDonnell's best friend after McDonnell became governor. An FBI investigation cleared him of anything illegal, but McDonnell was forced to repay the "loans." It turns out that the businessman involved was trying to secure business with the state of Virginia, and, although no quid pro quo was ever established, the whole affair badly damaged McDonnell's reputation, and knocked him out of consideration as a contender for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination. He shot himself in the foot big time.

There as many people in the red areas as in the blue areas. It splits about 50/50.
