Inspiration for America the Beautiful was Pikes Peak, Colorado
![](http://i42.tinypic.com/124vnu8.jpg) Pikes Peak, America's Mountain
Taken from a line in 'America the Beautiful' the patriotic song was written by Katharine Lee Bates in 1893. She wrote other versions later, in 1904 and 1913.
O beautiful for spacious skies, For amber waves of grain, For purple mountain majesties Above the fruited plain! America! America! God shed his grace on thee And crown thy good with brotherhood From sea to shining sea!
Katharine Lee Bates wrote the song following an inspirational visit to Pikes Peak, Colorado, USA, which she later described:
"One day some of the other teachers and I decided to go on a trip to 14,000-foot Pikes Peak. We hired a prairie wagon. Near the top we had to leave the wagon and go the rest of the way on mules. I was very tired. But when I saw the view, I felt great joy. All the wonder of America seemed displayed there, with the sea-like expanse."

A good conscience is a continual Christmas.
As we must account for every idle word, so must we account for every idle silence.
Anger is never without a reason, but seldom with a good one.
A learned blockhead is a greater blockhead than an ignorant one.
A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small bundle.
An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.
Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do.
Beware the hobby that eats.

Yes, I miss him too, Caww. Great memories of those years, including the night he won in 1980.

I wasn't much involved with politics then unfortunately but I really liked his demand to “Tear Down this Wall”......which was what brought me to paying closer attention....then after his great quote the whole area fell like dominoes.....it was exciting to see.
