7.2?! HOLY COW!!
That is a TREMENDOUS quake. Buildings have fallen; people have died. What a terrible shame!
I don't suppose that the Philippine government and contractors are interested in BUILDING "earthquake proof" structures. They exist elsewhere; they could exist there.

The depth of the earthquake is 20 miles below the surface. I’m not sure if there would be huge levels of damage. If that earthquake was 10 miles below the surface, then the damage and casualty toll would be huge.

Sorry here too, Laz. AlexW prayers that you are far from the epicenter and that you, your family and friends are safe.
This is a major quake and it’s shallow both of which can mean widespread and catastrophic damage.

Ouch!
AlexW, hope you’re OK. JR (non-freeper), hope you’re OK also! I’ll FB you and Vevz and try to see if you’re OK.
I also know of a great nature photographer in the Philippines. Prayers for all of them!

I hope it’s deep and distant enough from major population centers. Our prayers and best wishes.

And he was just saying that he was on the beach but protected by other islands. Oh-oh. Hope you and your family are safe, Alex.

Reuters says no immediate reports of damage or injuries. Not very many articles up yet though.
