Your blackthorn a/k/a shillelagh will be even more effective if you turn it over, look at the base of the head where there's a little natural wrinkle or gap - drill a good size hole (say 1/2") into the head there and pour in a little molten lead.

That will seriously get the attention of anybody who gets clocked with it.

I have a place in the mountains. Currently I feel safer in the large city I live in than the little mountain town due to the druggies/ homeless that have invaded the mountain communities.

I gave my daughter a 9mm pistol and took her to the range alot. She has been going to the range with me for years now. Not only is she very proficient with a pistol, she can shoot my AR and AK pattern rifle like a boss. :-D

I just took her and her friend shooting earlier today. Her friend had never shot a gun before. Now, she can safely shoot and field strip a pistol. Both of these girls are getting their CCWs in couple of weeks. They told me it felt empowering. I told them that it is the great equalizer. If you are patient, teach gun safety, and stress training and situational awareness in life, you can give the women in your life the perfect tool for self-protection. I am happy knowing that my daughter can protect herself if she is ever faced with a serious threat.

photo DSC01230_zpse80c7bb9.jpg Here are my choices. The aluminum one is fine as a walking stick but too light for serious use. The blackthorne is really too heavy for a walking stick but I think I will use it anyway. The wooden one with a handle is huckleberry. I made it for my Mother many years ago but I have used it a lot. Huckleberry is extremely dense and hard. It would do a fair job on most people. Just a little too light tho. The long hiking stick is made from Hickory. It is larger than they recommend for hiking (shoulder height). Mine is around 7 feet long and would make a fine weapon.

Hey, it is deadly to try to get between a college student and the tips she was on her feet serving drinks for hours to make...

I’ve always done at least some construction work-it makes for a hard swing-but I carry the same stuff in my purse that most women do-have you ever seen all the s*** in a woman’s purse? A good sized one like I carry weighs at least 8-10 lbs-lays waste to a nose easily...

The other thing I would do is join an aikido dojo somewhere.

They teach stick fighting and it's very effective.

This is the founder, O Sensei (Morihei Ueshiba), demonstrating. Pretty cool historical footage - he was not a big man but he could whack the heck out of much bigger guys and make it look easy.

We had some very basic training in self defense when I was a Federal Agent. I have never been in a lot of fights but in my entire life I have never lost one.

I was wrestling champ of our college track team and that included some really big strong guys. The one who gave me fits was a pole vaulter smaller than me. One of the big guys gave me a separated shoulder but I won anyway. Fortunately it was the final match.

If I ran across a trained fighter, I would not stand a chance now but that is not likely. The fact that I just about always have a cane, gun and knife would help tho.

All of the things stated are good ideas and things I was taught in self defense and martial arts classes over the years, but I still carry a gun.

I thought I saw a show on the sportsman channel demonstration “point blank” self defense shooting techniques since they claimed most self defense scenarios occur within 10 feet of the assailant.

Don't think of it as a "fight" because it isn't. It is survival. No rules, no draws, no referees, no tapping out. There are a lot of Trayvons out there who think it's a game.

1. Avoid bad places. I don't mean the ghetto - at 1:00 AM on Saturday night, an ATM is a bad place. So is a parking garage.

2. Have a weapon. Firearms are best if you've trained with them, and I don't mean a couple of weekend trips to the range on paper targets. Knives are very effective, once again, if you've trained on what to go for (hint - soft targets, face, throat, groin). Pepper spray is better than nothing, once again, if you've trained with it. You can carry it in places where the rest aren't practical (to say nothing of legal). The theme here? TRAIN. A weapon isn't a magic wand, it's a weapon.

3. Have a plan. This is active situational awareness: know where your weapons are, look for escape routes, think what you'll do if you hear footsteps behind you or somebody grabs you.

4. Be alert. This is passive situational awareness. Scan around you, use your peripheral vision, and TAKE THE GD EARBUDS OUT! If you can't hear, you have one less warning.

5. Run. Put your assailant down and get the hell out of there. He may have friends. Just don't run blindly or you might end up in a still-worse situation. Be in a position to run. Clogs, flip-flops, high heels are a disadvantage if they can't be left behind. (A high-heeled shoe, however, can be a very nasty weapon if you haven't anything else).

4. Don't be helpless. That means not being drunk in public, leaving your drink unattended in a bar while you hit the rest room, or alone in a crowd of people not "like you", whatever that means at the moment. You will know what it means when you get The Feeling - when you get The Feeling, get out.

Red - orange - yellow - green. Green is for when you're at home with the doors locked and a large dog at your feet. If you ever reach red, go lethal early. Between those two, don't be frightened, be ready.

Absolutely true and a great way to become a victim. I never ever talk on the phone when out in the open or walking in public.

I also carry a knife and my keys in a ‘rake’ as well as my gun. For many years I lived in a state where it is impossible to get a CCW (CA) so I had to rely on other things, I still have a lot of those good habits.

nowadays, with more females beign feral too, EVERYONE needs to be armed. While it’s true women usually target weaker targets, other women or children, gangs of women have attacked men walking alone.

In today’s world it’s not good to underestimate ANYONE as a potential threat. Teens try to kick the crap out of people. Groups of girls beat up adult women.

It’s best not to be lulled into a false sense of security of ANY stranger of ANY kind.

What is a recommendation for a knife to carry?

Quite so. But the Tueller Drill is far worse for civilians than it is for police. You figure that a policeman in uniform is on patrol, trying to expect the unexpected, and in the drill actually thinking that someone is going to charge him and he needs to draw his gun.

Almost guaranteed, if a cop is just be-bopping around and you charge him, 21 feet is a joke. Probably closer to 50 feet, for him to realize someone is charging, and charging at him, and has a knife in one hand, and he had better do something, and that something should be to draw his gun.

By the time he gets his gun out, roughly aiming at the individual charging him, that guy is going to be right on top of him.

Compare that to a civilian, who is not expecting trouble, who does not want trouble, and who is facing a perp probably a LOT closer than 50 feet, or who may be lurking and leap out at them.

Maybe, if you are lucky, just enough time to pull an easy to pull knife out of its sheath, and point it in the right direction. The amount of paranoia and preparedness and adrenaline to do that with a gun is just not going to be there.

However, other than him sneaking up behind you and bonking you on the head, this is a worst case scenario. This is why the combination of a gun and a knife are complementary. Knife for short range, gun for longer range *or* a pause in the action long enough to use the gun.

I tend to go on at length how, in a robbery situation, if a person has concealed carry, they have a huge advantage over the robber, even if the robbers gun is brandished, cocked, with the right kind of bullet and otherwise serviceable.

The fractions of a second advantages to a CC holder really add up.

It’s more than that. Robbers are so scared of concealed carry, and the advantages it gives to the cc holder, that they have either had to give up robbing, or use sneak attacks to disable, or even kill their victims before robbing them.

These cheap shot attacks are becoming more and more common, and the only defense is situational awareness, and staying out of range of a potential attacker. I have seen video of some attacks that are almost ridiculous. Somebody will go into a fast food joint, and a robber will go up to the counter next to them, like they intend to order food, then without warning, sucker punch them, get their wallet, and walk out the door.

So now it’s a woman’s fault for being raped because she ‘looked timid’...

I’m supposed to be safe in a miniskirt, but Lord help me if I’m not standing straight enough, then Liberals think I’m at fault...

Got it.
