The Senate and President were not supposed to be directly elected by the people either. The state legislatures got the shaft, but they have only themselves to blame because they ratified the 17th Amendment. Corruption in state legislatures was the primary impetus behind the 17th Amendment.

I’ve heard that, but apparently the legislatures weren’t so corrupt they couldn’t be pressured into voting for it. It’s the standard reply when I suggest we need to repeal it.
